Actress Susan Sarandon and Cleveland International act Meatloaf are among the name guests on this soundtrack from the forthcoming 20th Century-Fox film . Good sax breaks highlight the instrumentals which back up the bizarre, left-of-center songs. Note that this is not distributed by Epic. Best cuts: "The Time Warp," "Sweet Transvestite," "Hot Patootie -- Bless My Soul."

Tim Curry could out-act Olivier and Brando and still not live down his turn as a cross-dressing scientist -- nor should he. Richard O'Brien's hilarious rock musical is one of the most enduring vestiges of glam rock, but the score's success hinges on how it stuck to musical-comedy tradition as much as how it made Mick Jagger's transvestism blatant in Frank N. Furter's big number.

Damnit, Janet, this is one fine soundtrack -- it's rock, it's kitsch, it's Tim Curry at his finest moment as the sweet transvestite from Transylvania on the disc for this threw-toast-at-the-screen-who-knows-how-many-times-at-midnight, camp-gone-wild coming of age milestone. Offbeat is putting it mildly, but it works, so get in costume, crank up the music, put those hands on your hips and it's just a jump to the left and a step to the right. * * * *
