Starz Videos

After listening to this group's first album, it becomes apparent why bands like this are so often frustrated. Small imaginations fail to breed big, much less exciting, ideas. A constant buzzing, low volume, distorted guitar and the adoptation of Keith Moon's drum attack chart their way incessantly through the album. An occasional wave of feedback and plenty of secondhand guitar solos attempt to give the music a dynamic edge, but the recurrence of the pattern squelches the impact.

Starz's occasional strong point is their ability to write a better-than-average heavy-metal melody; "She's Just a Fallen Angel" exemplifies this, but not without much help from the clarifying production techniques of Jack Douglas. As for the rest, black leather, clichéd riffs, men trying to be boys by flirting with teenage hearts and a good production don't necessarily make a good rock band. A successful one? Maybe.

- Kris Nicholson, Rolling Stone, 9/23/76.
