Transformers 4

Teknicolors has been extremely involved in the making of the new movie Transformers 4, due for a summer 2014 release. Here is a recent article in the Detroit News showing some awesome pictures of a set we provided a lot of material for.

By Candice Williams - July 11, 2013

An Asian-inspired town seems to have popped up in downtown Detroit as construction continues on a set of the Transformers 4 movie.

Crews worked on several buildings Wednesday in a gated lot at Washington Blvd. and Clifford. A source with knowledge of the project said Wednesday that a Transformer 4 set is being constructed on Washington Blvd. near Bagley.

At least four Asian-styled structures and a series of columns joined an existing empty building on the set. Large bundles of bamboo sat nearby. A subway car was spotted at one end of the set.

?It looks like it?s all ruins,? said Jim Zalewski, a Toledo resident, as he unknowingly passed by the set on his way to a Detroit Tigers game. When learning the lot was a movie set he decided to take some photos before heading to Comerica Park.

?I think it?s cool,? he said. ?It?ll bring money to the area.?

Detroiter Calais Clark said she was relaxing in neighboring Grand Circus Park about a month ago when she noticed crews bringing in gravel.

Clark, from a rural town in Pennsylvania, said she?s sure she?ll watch the filming from her friends? apartments that overlook the set.

It makes me feel like I?m living in an actual city,? she said.

Redford Paint Store Goes Hollywood

By Pat Murphy ? December 17, 2009

Customers walking into the Teknicolors, Inc., a paint store in Redford, are in for a surprise.

Amid the paint samples, brushes and rollers is a large chunk of what appears to be construction site rubble ? a large chunk of concrete with steal beams protruding.

It's a remnant from the movie set of Red Dawn, filmed earlier this year, mostly in Troy.

It's also a relevant conversation piece, explains store manager Logan Orr, referring to the Styrofoam prop. ?Customers say, ?What's this,'? he said, ?and that develops into a conversation about our paints.?

His company moved into the store at 25822 Schoolcraft, west of Beech Daly, in 2007, when the building was home to a paint outlet owned and operated by the Glenn Hanson family since 1957.

The store still caters to residential and commercial customers. ?But we sell paint for anything that needs to be painted,? said Orr.

The company has supplied paint and/or finishes for 17 movies this year. Its history with movie and commercial art studios, however, goes back more than 15 years to the making of movies like Hoffa and 8 Mile in 1992 and 2001, respectively ? long before 2008 when state legislation offered lucrative tax incentives to filmmakers working in Michigan.

His company provided paints and finishes to television stations as well as production companies making displays for the International Auto Show, said Orr. ?And when movie companies started filming in Michigan, they called us,? he explained. ?We didn't advertise, it was just word-of-mouth contact.?

His store still welcomes do-it-yourselfers, Orr said. ?We have a knowledgeable staff to help customers find the right paint for the job.?

One of those staffers is Robert Hanson Jr., who worked with his dad and grandfather prior to the family's selling the store. ?I graduated from Thurston (class of ?74) and walked across the street to begin working,? he said, ?and never regretted it.?

Hollywood Loves Detroit!

During the summer and fall of 2009 Teknicolors took part in the making of "Red Dawn". We supplied everything from paint, to fullers earth and powdered graphite. It was a sincere pleasure to work with the art and construction teams from both the local and Hollywood teams. We were able to develop a friendship as well as a mutual trust with the entire crew. We look forward to many more movies being made in Michigan. Thanks "Red Dawn"!
