Joseph Hyman Ethic Awards:
The AIC Ethics Award was established to recognize individuals who:
- Perform duties dictated by ethical considerations, in the face of difficulties, for the benefit of the public and/or workers in chemistry and chemical engineering;
- Display leadership in an organization's ethical relationships with the public and/or employees in the chemistry field;
- Has taught, researched and/or has authorship in professional ethics; and/or
- Perform effective advocacy of organizational and/or governmental
policies relating to chemistry which encourage ethical treatment of individuals.
Each year a plaque and a $500 travel allowance is presented to the Ethics Award recipient during the National Meeting of The Institute, and is followed by his/her presentation.

In June 2000, the American Institute of Chemists Board of Directors voted to change the name of this award to the Joseph Hyman Ethics Award in honor of Mr. Hyman who founded the award in 1991.
