Update on the Deep State
Deep State 2.0 ,by Alex Newman, Appleton, Wisconsin: Western Islands Publishing, 2026, 247 pages, paperback.
Six years ago, a man could be laughed out of a dinner party for using the phrase “deep state” without air quotes around it. Today the same phrase runs in the headlines of the papers that once treated it as a symptom. The facts did not change. What changed is that the machine got careless. It grew large enough to be seen from the road.
Alex Newman’s first volume, Deep State: The Invisible Government Behind the Scenes , published in 2020, told Americans what their government had become. Deep State 2.0 tells them what it has done since. The distance between the two books is the distance between a warning and an indictment.
