Charting a Path of Discovery and Achievement at UHCL

Alexis Staropoli's transformative journey from student to leader

Written by: Lauren Sawyer
During Staropoli's journey at UHCL, she was involved in many student organizations including the Campus Activities Board (CAB).

Alexis Staropoli began her academic journey at University of Houston- Clear Lake (UHCL) in 2020, initially majoring in computer science and engineering. However, she soon discovered that engineering was not her true calling. Instead, she developed a passion for marketing while serving as the recruitment and retention coordinator on the Campus Activities Board
“That is when my passion grew for marketing and I knew it was what I wanted to pursue,” said Staropoli.

Staropoli is set to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing and is eager to pursue a career in digital marketing. Her goal is to create impactful campaigns and drive brand growth using her skills in analytics to enhance engagement and achieve measurable results.

“My ultimate goal is to develop into a marketing leader, inspiring innovation and guiding future marketers toward success,” she said.

Staropoli expressed gratitude for the supportive culture at UH-Clear Lake and its acceptance of non-traditional students. The university’s tight knit community and solid reputation influenced her decision to enroll.

“As a young mother, UHCL’s supportive environment promised not only an education, but a home for both my child and my own ambitions,” she said.

Although Staropoli achieved her goals and made it to the finish line, the journey to her success wasn’t always easy. Trying to take classes that worked with her schedule, while juggling the demands of a busy life was daunting. However, she wouldn’t let that deter her from her mission. She organized her courses and switched her academic plan to stay on track.

“With each semester, as I adapted and rearranged my academic plan, I discovered that even the most complex schedules could fall into place with thoughtfulness and determination."

Several professors and departments at UHCL left a lasting impression on Staropoli. She highlighted Professor of Art Jason Makepeace , who reignited her passion for art and sculpture, and Professor of Writing Lorie Jacobs , who provided empathy and support. Staropoli also expressed her gratitude for the office of Student Involvement and Leadership , describing it as her “haven,” that felt like a second home.

“The Dean of Students team truly embodied the spirit of UHCL and was filled with support. My advisors were not just guides; they were mentors who nurtured my growth in countless ways,” she said. “Additionally, the familiar, friendly faces at the Office of University Advancement became a cherished part of alumni and UHCL events, punctuating my experience with fond memories,” she explained. “In every corridor and across departments, professors, faculty, and staff have interwoven their wisdom and kindness into the tapestry of my college years.”

The future marketing leader said she is thankful for her family, friends, and mentors that have been with her through her college years, and have left her with life lessons that she will cherish forever. As one of the selected Spring 2024 Commencement speakers, Staropoli is honored and excited to share her journey and the lessons learned with her peers.

“This opportunity holds a special significance as it allows me to share our journey and the lessons we've learned along the way,” said Staropoli. “It’s a chance to inspire hope and excitement for the future as we all stand on the threshold of a new chapter in our lives. I'm excited to craft a message that resonates with my fellow graduates and encapsulates the spirit of our shared experiences.”

Staropoli advises current students to get involved on campus to enhance their college experience.

“UHCL has many opportunities to be a part of the community and to enhance your experience,” she said. “When I was strictly just taking classes in my first semester, college was a bit boring. As soon as I got involved in organizations in my second semester, my entire view and experience at UHCL changed,” she explained. “I am sad that my time at UHCL is over because it has truly become another home and family that I don’t want to leave, and that is all because of the connections and relationships I built by getting involved on campus. You can do anything you set your mind to, never limit yourself or be afraid to step out of your comfort zone because that is when the true journey begins.”

The Spring 2024 Commencement will be held at NRG Arena (1 NRG Pkwy, Houston, TX 77054) on Saturday, May 11, 2024. For more information about commencement visit, www.uhcl.edu/academics/commencement/ .
