From passion to purpose: Lisset Fernandez's journey to becoming a school psychologist

Written by: Lauren Sawyer

Driven by a profound fascination with the human mind and behavior, University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) senior Lisset Fernandez is poised to transform her passion into a promising career. Upon her upcoming graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Behavioral Analysis , Fernandez is eager to advance into UHCL’s School Psychology program. Her journey at UHCL has been marked by a nurturing community, expert faculty, and an unwavering commitment to student success, all of which have been pivotal in her academic and personal growth.

“Understanding why people think and act the way they do has been a lifelong interest of mine, and I wanted to pursue a career where I could make a positive impact on the lives of others,” said Fernandez. “ I chose UHCL because of its strong reputation in psychology. The faculty members are experts in their fields, and UHCL's location also provided numerous opportunities for research and professional development.”

Throughout her college years, Fernandez faced common challenges, such as balancing work, school, and personal life. She also dealt with imposter syndrome, which made it difficult for her to believe in her abilities to achieve her goals. However, she overcame those obstacles by managing her time wisely, seeking support from her peers, and utilizing UHCL’s student resources.

Developing effective time management skills became crucial for me. I had to learn strategies like creating a detailed calendar and using a personal planner to stay organized and on track with my tasks,” said Fernandez. “Over the years I have built my self-confidence through accomplishments and reminding myself of my strengths and capabilities,” she explained. “Additionally, the Department of Psychology's courses supported my academic growth, preparing me for various career paths within psychology. Because of these opportunities, I feel confident and ready to pursue my passion for psychology after graduation.”

Several departments and professors left a lasting impression on Fernandez. She highlighted behavioral analyst and research associate, Loukia Tsami , and Autism Services Manager, Victoria Fletcher, for the endless support, guidance, and preparation they provided her.

With Professor Tsami, I gained hands-on experience in research and psychology, particularly through projects like the Interdisciplinary Telehealth Model at Baylor College of Medicine,” said Fernandez. “Professor Fletcher and her team taught me clinical experience at UHCL's Intensive Outpatient Behavior Disorders Clinic , where I developed my skills in behavior analysis and patient care.”

Fernandez was drawn to psychology for the chance to assist students needing academic modifications and accommodations. As a school psychologist, she plans to work with educators and families to develop support plans for students facing academic challenges.

“Whether it's providing extra resources, adapting teaching methods, or arranging for accommodations like extra time on tests, I'll be there to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed,” she said. “It's all about creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can thrive.”

Fernandez is profoundly grateful to her parents, who as first-generation immigrants faced numerous challenges but worked tirelessly to provide for their family and support her education.

“Despite the obstacles, they worked tirelessly to provide for our family and support my educational journey. From the long hours they spent working, to the sacrifices they made to ensure I had the resources I needed, their constant support has been the drive behind my success. Their encouragement and belief in me have given me the strength to overcome any obstacles. I am endlessly grateful for their love, support, and sacrifices, which have shaped me into the person I am today.”

As one of the 2024 Spring Commencement speakers, Fernandez looks forward to sharing her experiences and inspiring her fellow graduates.

“I'm excited to share my story in hope to inspire those around me. Being the student speaker is the cherry on top of this milestone,” she said.

Fernandez encourages current college students to stay positive, embrace every growth opportunity, and to not be afraid to step out of their comfort zone.

“Whether it's pursuing research, taking on leadership roles, or seeking guidance — remember that challenges are opportunities for learning — as well as asking your professors to mentor you,” she said.

The Spring 2024 Commencement will be held at NRG Arena (1 NRG Pkwy, Houston, TX 77054) on Saturday, May 11, 2024. For more information about commencement visit, www.uhcl.edu/academics/commencement/ .
