Description of The Finest Holiday Cottages in Great Britain
Bruern, Cotswolds, England 10 Cottages
Sole winners of The English Tourism Councils England for Excellence Award 1998, Bruern Holiday Cottages are the finest holiday cottages in Great Britain: they offer the comfort and attention to detail of a good hotel; the privacy, independence and space of home; and the civilised ease and style of country house living. That's why they are the five star quality benchmark for the most important and prestigious national and official inspection organisations. When the English Tourism Council, The National Trust or the Royal Automobile Club want to show their professionals the ne plus ultra in holiday cottages, they send them to us: we set the standard for the people who set the standards. Judy, widow of the Hon. Michael Astor, began converting the cottages in 1992, bringing to the task thoughtfulness, imagination and a passion for design. In the interiors, in the gardens and in the very way Bruern is run, nothing has been done without the guests experience and point of view in mind. From the overall conception to the tiniest detail, everything has been planned, considered and beautifully executed with this purpose. The cottages are for people who mind about their surroundings, who have beautiful homes themselves, and don't see why they should lower their standards on holiday. When she designed them, Judys criterion was that they should be places in which she would like to live permanently, and our guests clearly agree, since they tell us that they never want to go home. They say that there's nothing better than arriving at the cottage, tired after a long journey, to find the lights on, fire ready, a beautifully laid tea tray with a cake waiting on the table, a bottle of wine in the fridge, and the candles just waiting for a match. They comprise ten five-star graded cottages, which sleep two to eight; they were converted from the mellow stone Victorian stable yard and outbuildings of Bruern Abbey, a handsome eighteenth century house visible over the trees opposite. They are uniquely stylish and luxurious, and exceptionally well equipped, with open fires, antique furniture and four-poster beds, as well as state-of-the-art kitchens and bathrooms. Each cottage is decorated differently, and has a private enclosed terrace with garden furniture, a big white umbrella and a barbecue; many have their own secluded gardens too. All cottages have full oil central heating (thermostatically controlled), a stereo system, CDs, satellite TV, videos, and access to an excellent video library. Each cottage has a good collection of books and board games as well. They all have direct-dial telephones with automatic billing, power showers, microwave ovens, dishwashers, washing machines, tumble dryers and fridge-freezers. Cots, high chairs and stairgates can be supplied. Cleaning equipment, towels and linen are included: guests can ask for backboards, and choose duvets or blankets (non-allergenic if preferred). There's a wonderfully generous welcome basket with wine, cheese, butter, milk, tea, coffee, cereal, eggs, chocolate, a bottle of wine, and homemade bread, jam, cakes and biscuits.
