CLEVELAND — The Guardians made a few trades ahead of the July 31 deadline , but they ultimately decided to hold onto All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan .
The Guardians traded former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber to the Toronto Blue Jays and reliever Paul Sewald to the Detroit Tigers .
Almost all of the remaining trade deadline-centered attention around the Guardians revolved around Kwan, who is under club control through 2027 and was among the best hitters potentially available on the open market. He spoke this week about the trade rumors and his contract situation, saying he'd still be open to an extension to remain in Cleveland.
Kwan , a two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glover, has been planted at the top of the Guardians order since his MLB debut in 2022. He helped them reach the playoffs in 2022 and 2024, with last year's postseason ending with a trip to the American League Championship series.
At the time of the deadline, Kwan had posted a .758 OPS while again playing Gold Glove-level defense in left field. He also recently recorded his first career multi-homer game July 24 against the Baltimore Orioles .
Bieber and Sewald are moving on , but Kwan will remain atop the Guardians lineup and in left field for the remainder of the season.
