NFL free agency essentially begins today with the start of the "legal tampering" period when clubs are allowed to negotiate with pending free agents from other teams.
Before attention fully turns toward free agency, we're publishing our first seven-round Denver Broncos mock draft of the offseason. The picks, of course, could look very different in a few weeks depending on who the Broncos land during free agency.
In the first round, we have Denver landing UNC running back Omarion Hamptonat pick No. 20. Boise State running back Ahston Jeanty and Penn State tight end Tyler Warren would both be dream picks for the Broncos, but neither are expected to fall to Denver. Hampton would be quite a consolation. GM George Paton and coach Sean Payton shouldn't feel an urge to trade up for a RB given the depth of this year's class.
In the second round, we have Paton selecting a fellow UCLA alum in linebacker Carson Schwesinger. The Broncos desperately need a linebacker who can cover, making Schwesinger an easy pick.
In the third round, Denver adds another weapon for quarterback Bo Nix in Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond, who ran a 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds at the NFL combine.
Up next in the fourth round is Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson, a former Nix teammate. Even if the Broncos sign a tight end during free agency, the team would be wise to add a promising young prospect like Ferguson.
Rounding out Denver's selections are a trio of picks in the sixth round: Kansas State running back DJ Giddens, UNC interior offensive lineman Willie Lampkinand Western Kentucky cornerback Upton Stout.
