- Brian Kelly, LSU football faces tough dilemma with Ju'Juan Johnson this season
BATON ROUGE — Through the first handful of preseason practices for LSU football, Ju'Juan Johnson has been seen taking snaps at quarterback, wide receiver and running back.
The sophomore athlete, or jack-of-all-trades now if you will, has worked at several different positions in his short time so far with the Tigers, including at cornerback early in his freshman season last year. But it has been more of finding creative ways for offensive coordinator Joe Sloan to get Johnson on the field in some capacity.
Johnson signed with LSU out of Lafayette Christian Academy after setting the Louisiana High School Athletic Association record for all-purpose yards with 14,475 and career touchdowns with 171.
THESE GAMES WILL DETERMINE LSU'S COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF FATE
He's gifted and a playmaker and LSU coach Brian Kelly said Johnson has handled every wrinkle the staff has thrown at him in stride.
"He's given everything we've asked him, probably more. He's a special kid. He'll do anything. We got him working at quarterback right now, wide receiver, running back," Kelly said.
But LSU faces a looming question with Johnson this season though. He appeared in all 13 games as a freshman last season. Kelly told reporters Monday that he is open to redshirting Johnson, but hasn't arrived at the answer yet.
How Johnson plays will dictate that.
"I think when it comes to making a decision on Ju'Juan it's how far do we go this year with him? Because we didn't redshirt him last year. I want to make sure his time is valuable and impactful," Kelly said.
"Whatever happens with Ju'Juan, he's going to play four games, the question is he going to play five? That will be dictated as he performs and the offense kind of works around him. But we love him and what he's doing for our program."
