The Denver Broncos defeated the Houston Texans with a last-second 34-yard Wil Lutz field goal in an 18-15 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams started the game with special teams blunders on their opening drives. After the Texans missed a 51-yard field goal attempt, Broncos kicker Wil Lutz later had a 51-yard field goal attempt blocked by Texans defensive lineman Denico Autry .
On their next drive, the Texans drove down to the one-yard line and were stuffed three plays in a row. After initially lining up to go for it on 4th-and-1, Houston settled for a field goal after a false start penalty, taking a 3-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud left with a concussion before a Houston punt. Three plays later, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix threw an interception to safety Calen Bullock on a pass intended for wide receiver Courtland Sutton . Houston later kicked a field goal following that turnover to make it 6-0.
Later in the second quarter, Nix threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Sutton to take a 7-6 lead. After that, Houston retook the lead after a third Ka'imi Fairbairn field goal made it 9-7 just after the two-minute warning.
Just before halftime, practice squad wide receiver Michael Bandy muffed a punt and the Texans recovered the ball at Denver's 30-yard line. Bandy was called up from the practice squad to fill in for Marvin Mims , who is in concussion protocol. Houston then added another field goal to take a 12-7 lead into halftime.
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was ruled out with a concussion at the break. In the third quarter, Fairbairn kicked another field goal to extend Houston's lead to 15-7. In the fourth quarter, Nix threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to rookie running back RJ Harvey , then he connected with Troy Franklin on a two-point conversion to tie the game at 15-15.
After exchanging punts, the Broncos got the ball back at their own 36-yard line with 50 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Two plays later, Nix had a 25-yard run that moved the ball up to the Texans' 36-yard line. After two J.K. Dobbins runs and another Nix run got the ball up to the 16-yard line, Denver kicked a 34-yard field goal to seal an 18-15 win.
The Broncos now have a short week ahead of a Thursday Night Football clash with the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 6 ( view Denver's complete schedule ).
