You'd never guess who leads the Denver Broncos in interceptions: outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman . Tillman leads the Broncos with two interceptions, after picking off Geno Smith and Dak Prescott in consecutive home games.
Tillman had two impressive returns, and many fans joked that Tillman could play on offense as a tight end or a fullback. Maybe it wasn't such a joke after all. Broncos coach Sean Payton addressed the idea on Wednesday after practice.
"We always look at our defensive personnel relative to an 'F,' a goal line fullback, those kinds of things," Payton said. "Some teams maybe don't carry a fullback, so they use a defensive tackle. But yes, you pay attention to… I think you have to block them all for him to score, though. But listen, it's been fun to watch."
This season, Payton has used offensive linemen in creative ways. Alex Palczweski has become a kind of cult hero for reporting eligible during short-yardage run plays, and left tackle Garett Bolles came within inches of catching a touchdown pass.
And yes, the Broncos have a history of using defensive players on goal-line scenarios. In 2012, defensive tackle Mitch Unrein caught a one-yard pass from Hall of Famer Peyton Manning for a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Check it out below:
It'd be a lot of fun to see Tillman in on the goal line. It'd be even more fun to see him catch a touchdown pass! We'll see if Payton ever lets him tote the rock on offense this season.
