The Denver Broncos have three injuries to monitor this week coming off a 44-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys .
Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims suffered a concussion on Sunday, tight end/fullback Nate Adkins suffered a knee injury and cornerback Pat Surtain left at halftime with a shoulder injury .
Mims suffered the injury on a kick return late in Sunday's blowout when Denver was leading by 20 points with under five minutes remaining in the game. Broncos coach Sean Payton explained during his conference call with reporters on Monday that special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi attempted to sub Tyler Badie in for Mims before the return, but miscommunication led to Badie going in for running back RJ Harvey instead.
"I know 'Riz' was trying to send in Tyler for Marvin," Payton said. "Somehow, the communication failed. Tyler went in for RJ ... Right at that stage of the game, you're trying to be smart."
Mims is now in the NFL's concussion protocol, giving him an uncertain status for next week's game against the Houston Texans .
Payton was not willing to provide an update on Surtain during Monday's call. Payton also did not comment on Adkins' injury, but KUSA-TV's Mike Klis tweeted Monday that it's " looking like it might be significant ." Adkins previously missed the first two games of the season with an ankle injury.
Elsewhere on the injury front, tight end Lucas Krull -- who is currently on injured reserve with a foot injury -- underwent surgery on Monday. That is expected to sideline him for about eight weeks, according to the Denver Gazette 's Chris Tomasson . Such a timeline would see Krull potentially return in time for the final two games of the regular season.
The Broncos are scheduled to practice for the first time this week on Wednesday, and we should have more clarity on the team's injury statuses after that practice.
