The Denver Broncos are building a new stadium -- and it will feature a retractable roof .
Many Broncos fans are opposed to the idea of a roof -- even a retractable roof -- because they believe it will take away some of Denver's homefield advantage scenarios. The Broncos are still going to play a mile above sea level, though, and they haven't said the roof will be closed every time there's snow in the forecast.

"I know the one thing I kept reading was we're used to the snow and the elements," coach Sean Payton said this week. "I'm not going to speak for Greg [Penner] and Carrie [Walton Penner], but those will all exist."
Based on that comment from Payton, it sounds like Denver hasn't ruled out the possibility of leaving the roof open for snow, perhaps for a scenario such as a Florida-based team coming to town. The plus of having a roof is the ability to host mega sports events like the Super Bowl .
"Super Bowls, Finals Fours, just on and on," Payton said.
The retractable roof will give the team extra flexibility.

"There's a sterileness sometimes if you chose to go with the roof," Payton said. "I think that there's an advantage for the home team. Natural grass, it's heathier for the players. We wouldn't want to confuse a closed roof with changing how the altitude affects you. I just think the elements are important, and I know from speaking with Greg and Carrie and their vision and plan, just having that flexibility to control it to some degree."
The Broncos hope to have the new stadium built in time for the 2031 NFL season . Denver does not currently have any players signed beyond the 2030 season, but key players like quarterback Bo Nix , guard Quinn Meinerz and cornerback Pat Surtain could still be around to open the team's new stadium down the road, assuming they get extensions.
"It's exciting," Nix said of the stadium. " Our ownership has a big vision for what this organization is going to be, and I think everyone else is just going to follow along with their lead. I know the players are excited. It's a big step for our team, big step for our organization, and I know there's a lot of work to be put into it, but it's exciting."
Nix will be 31 for the 2031 NFL season. This year, there are six starting QBs older than 31 .
