Broncos Wire 's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year safety JL Skinner , No. 34.
Before the Broncos :Skinner was a four-year player with the Boise State Broncos from 2019-22, playing the majority of snaps at the safety position. In 44 total games, Skinner recorded 208 total tackles (133 solo, 75 assisted, 10 tackles for loss), seven interceptions, 15 pass deflections, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
In preparing for the 2023 NFL combine, Skinner tore his pectoral muscle , which severely impacted his draft stock. Skinner was eventually drafted by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round (183rd overall) in the 2023 NFL draft.
Broncos tenure:Skinner's pre-combine injury kept him out for most of the 2023 season, but he did eventually see action in two games. In 2024, Skinner saw dramatically more playing time, particularly as a special teams gunner. Skinner was healthy for 14 games in 2024, playing 79 percent of special teams snaps in the games he played.
Chances to make the 53-man roster:Toss-up. Although Skinner was a valuable special teams contributor in 2024, he has dealt with several injuries through his first few years in the NFL. If he can stay healthy, the 24-year-old safety will have an opportunity to win a spot on the active roster this summer, but he's certainly not a lock.
