The Denver Broncos are down a tight end going into Week 2 of NFL preseason.
Broncos coach Sean Payton announced after Thursday's joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals that tight end Nate Adkins underwent a tightrope procedure after spraining his ankle. The recovery time will linger into the regular season.
"The benefit of the tightrope is that it gives you a firm timeline, a consistent recovery," Payton said. "I don't want to give you a timeline on it, but he's going to miss some early portion of the season. That was done successfully and clean. There weren't any other things that they noticed, and it was a smart decision.
"That's a relatively new procedure, if I said within the last 15 years. The benefit of it is the predictability. You don't want to have a procedure done and then, well, we don't know when it's going to be back. So from a medical standpoint, it's relatively new and effective."
Adkins is expected to make Denver's initial 53-man roster , and he will then likely be placed on injured reserve, ruling him out for at least the first four games of the season. The Broncos will likely make the same procedural move with linebacker Drew Sanders , who has a foot injury . If a player goes on IR before the initial 53-man roster is set, the player is ruled out for the entire season. That's why Adkins and Sanders are still on the active roster.
