Marcus Davenport has played a total of six games the past two seasons because of injuries, and now he's dealing with another one.
Davenport left the Detroit Lions ' 52-21 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Sept. 14, in the second half with a shoulder injury and is scheduled for further evaluation Monday.
"I wasn't really about to say anything about that cause I don't know," Davenport said when asked about his injury after the game. "But right now I'm OK, I'm happy we got that win. Good team win."
Davenport missed time in Sunday's first half with an ankle injury but returned after working on the sideline with trainers for the start of the second half. He was injured with 9:33 left in the third quarter when he sacked Bears quarterback Caleb Williams for an 8-yard loss.
Last year, Davenport had four quarterback hits in his Lions debut, missed a Week 2 game with a groin injury then suffered a season-ending torn triceps in Week 3. The Lions re-signed Davenport to be their starting defensive end opposite Aidan Hutchinson this offseason despite his extensive injury history.
Davenport played four games with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 before undergoing ankle surgery and has played more than 13 games just once in his career.
He told the Free Press before the start of the season he changed his offseason workout routine and began working with a new dietitian in hopes of avoiding injury this fall. He said he was "nervous" for the start of the season and "not good" at not taking criticism about his health personal.
"As much as I want to be like the strongest and be like, 'Yeah, things don't bother me, this doesn't bother me,'" he said. "It does and at that point I just got to pick myself back up."
Davenport appeared to have an ice pack or device on his right shoulder under his clothes after the game.
Lions safety Brian Branch said he suffered just a cramp when he left the game in the fourth quarter and was fine after the game.
