Welcome back, Quinn Gray .
On Saturday, Sept. 13, the former Florida A&M football star quarterback will contend against his alma mater as the head coach of Albany State.
Gray's Golden Rams (2-0) will face the Rattlers (0-2) this Saturday at 7 p.m. on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium, where he once dazzled FAMU football fans during his record-breaking career.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference television network will televise FAMU's home opener versus Albany State and will also be broadcast on 96.1 JAMZ .
Gray, 46, has been the head football coach at Albany State since December 2022 after stints as an assistant at Alcorn State and Memphis. The Albany State Golden Rams compete on the NCAA Division II level and are 14-9 during Gray's tenure.
Gray's sons, Quinn Jr. and Ashton, are freshmen defensive linemen on the Golden Rams out of Tallahassee's Lincoln High School.
"I don't think I have to motivate the guys this week. The motivation is on the schedule," Gray said on Albany State's weekly coaches show, 'A Chat with Coach Gray.'
"They understand who we are playing and what we are going to face. We are going to have to be disciplined and do our jobs. The motivation is already there. It's a Division I school, and I'm a former Rattler. We are going to have to have our 'A-game' to come out of there with a win."
Gray is from Fort Lauderdale, but he has made Tallahassee home since playing for Billy Joe's FAMU Rattlers from 1997 to 2001 and earning his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education in 2006.
A product of the Gulf Coast Offense, Gray finished his career as FAMU's all-time leader in passing yards (7,378), pass attempts (1,113), pass completions (562), and TD passes (57), and led the Rattlers to the 2000 and 2001 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships. Former Rattlers standout quarterback Ryan Stanley broke all those records during his time on campus from 2015 to 2019.
Gray played in the National Football League from 2002 to 2008, primarily for the Jacksonville Jaguars , followed by the Houston Texans , the Indianapolis Colts , and the Kansas City Chiefs .
He was inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame and MEAC Hall of Fame in 2020.
Post playing career, Gray coached high school in Jacksonville, returned to Tallahassee to be FAMU's associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach from 2011-2014. Gray was Lincoln High School's head football coach from 2017 to 2019 .
Gray and the Albany State Golden Rams, led by star quarterback Isaiah Knowles, have an opportunity to continue their perfect start to the 2025 season by knocking off a Division I team, the FAMU Rattlers , which could help Gray become a hot name in college football as a coach on the rise.
"They're catching a team right now who's 0-2, trying to figure out a way to win," FAMU head coach James Colzie III said on Monday, Sept. 8's SWAC football coaches media availability.
"We respect all opponents, especially teams as well as Coach Gray's group. So we can't take it lightly. We get a chance to come back home, but Albany State's coming in to win this football game."
