Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart knows his team is younger than in the past. He also knows that some young, inexperienced players are going to have to play meaningful snaps this year.
Georgia has a lot of candidates to have a breakout season. The Dawgs' former No. 1 recruiting class is entering its sophomore season and should be quite productive this year. ESPN named Georgia's second-year breakout candidate as former five-star cornerback recruit Ellis Robinson.
"While many expected greater impact from Robinson as the No. 1-ranked player in the ESPN 300, Georgia's defense had three players selected in the first round of the NFL draft," Billy Tucker wrote . "Even this season, Robinson is not projected to start on the outside, but he'll see plenty of meaningful snaps at nickel and has the skills to take over the perimeter as a lockdown corner at any point.
"Word from Athens is that the light has come on. Robinson is seeing the game more clearly, allowing him to play faster. Reminder: Robinson possesses a rare blend of length, speed and ball skills. He just happens to be part of a defense where that's the norm."
Daylen Everette and Daniel Harris are the Bulldogs presumed starting cornerbacks in Week 1 against Marshall at home. However, throughout the season Robinson has chance to play on passing downs at the very least. Robinson did not play a lot last season, but a year of learning and being in Georgia's strength program helps his chance to display his talent to the college football world.
"He's improved, he's worked really hard, he competes in practice, he can play physical," Kirby Smart said about Robinson. "He doesn't always do it, he needs to do it more consistently. He is not shy or afraid of contact, and he's got ball skills. He makes plays on the ball a lot, and that's a big part of being a corner."
Robinson is part of a Georgia secondary that lost Malaki Starks and Dan Jackson to the NFL draft, but returns a lot of talent and should be one of UGA's biggest strengths.
