Sam Darnold came to the Vikings as a bridge quarterback and left the team as someone the team and fanbase owed a debt of gratitude.
The former USC Trojan had hopped around the NFL after the team that drafted him cut bait, but the Vikings saved his career. He went 14-3, and while he wasn't brought back, he signed a $100 million deal with the Seahawks , which seemed impossible a year ago.
Darnold spoke to The Athletic about his time in Minnesota and gave an honest reflection on how his season ended despite the success they had.
Darnold gave a blunt explanation saying, "For lack of a better term, we laid an egg as an offense, and I think, for me personally, that sucks. I felt like we were a really good team, but at the end of the day — and this is gonna sound a little pessimistic — but when you get to the end of it and you don't win the whole thing, you failed. I feel like I could have played way better, to be completely honest with you. I feel I didn't play up to my standard. I truly feel that way. I feel like if I would have just played better, I would've been able to give the team a chance."
Football is, and will forever be, a team game. While Darnold falling on the proverbial sword is admirable, the entire team didn't do him much favors.
The offensive line especially didn't help matters, which is why the interior group saw itself get overhauled this offseason. Darnold is now in Seattle with the Seahawks, but will play the Vikings in Week 13, so there is a reunion to look forward to.
