For as much as a backup quarterback can endear himself to a fanbase, former Ohio State second-string QB Devin Brown did just that. Sure, some in Buckeye Nation felt Brown should start over Will Howard , but it was another reason that secured his legacy in the eyes of most fans. Brown never said an ill word about playing time and wanted nothing more than to see his team succeed. Even though he would put his name in the transfer portal in early December, he would wait until the championship run was over to entertain offers from other schools. He could have checked out early, and no one would have faulted him for seeking greener pastures.
Shortly after the Buckeyes hoisted the championship trophy, Brown would commit to the Cal Bears, coming in as a seasoned vet and having learned under one of the best in Ryan Day. However, things have not worked out exactly as Brown may have envisioned. It was recently announced that true freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has been named the starter for the Bears.
Sagapolutele is not your average freshman. He was the No. 7-rated quarterback according to 247Sports, and was originally signed and enrolled at Oregon before entering the portal just a week later in early January.
It is an unfortunate turn of events for Brown, who had hoped to be in a place where he could contribute on the field. But knowing how he handled losing the quarterback competition at Ohio State, there will be no bigger cheerleader than Brown, and Golden Bear fans will love having a guy like that on their sidelines.
