The Guardians also made a few roster moves official ahead of Friday's game centered around Shane Bieber and Austin Hedges .

Guardians fall to the Astros
Josh Hader worked the ninth inning to earn the save, and the Guardians fell to the Astros 4-2 Friday night.
Jose Altuve walks into double play; Guardians trail entering ninth inning
The Astros had another chance to break the game open and came up short thanks to a double play due to a base running mistake by Jose Altuve, who appears to have thought Paredes tagged and broke for home on a flyout to right field. He hadn't, and Altuve was tagged out for a double play to end the inning.
Bryan Abreu escapes 8th inning with double play
The Guardians put together a hit-and-run, and it just turned out to be unfortunate timing.
David Fry drew a walk to bring the potential tying run to the plate, which happened to be Jose Ramirez with one out. After working it to a full count, Fry took off on the 3-2 pitch, but Ramirez softly popped out to third baseman Isaac Paredes , who threw to first for the easy double play.
The Astros and Guardians will head to the ninth with Houston holding a 4-2 lead.
Matt Festa escapes bases-loaded jam, gets help from Gabriel Arias
The Astros nearly broke the game open in the seventh, but Matt Festa was able to escape it unharmed.
Gabriel Arias played a major role in that after he saved at least one and possibly two runs with a leaping catch to rob Christian Walker of a hit.
Festa then induced a flyout off the bat of Victor Caratini to end the inning with the Guardians trailing 4-2.
David Fry home run makes it 2-run score; Guardians, Astros update
David Fry went oppo taco, as they say, for a solo home run to right field that was just out of the reach of Astros right fielder Jacob Melton.
That was Fry's first home run of the season since returning from the injured list. It cannot be understated how much the Guardians need his bat to bolster the lineup.
Brendan Rodgers home run extends Astros lead
That one had nothing to do with baseball luck, that one was hammered.
In the top of the sixth inning, Brendan Rodgers crushed a solo home run to right-center field off Logan Allen that has made it 4-1 Houston.
Guardians cut into Astros' lead, Jacob Melton makes highlight reel catch
The Guardians are on the board, cutting into the Astros' lead in the fifth, but it would have been more if not for Jacob Melton in right field.
Will Wilson made it a 3-1 score with an RBI single to left field. With runners on the corners and two out, Angel Martinez hit a ball down the right-field line. Melton ranged over and on the run made a full-out diving grab to end the inning and save at least one run.
Christian Walker bloop single extends Astros lead over Guardians
Christian Walker blooped a single into right field that fell just in front of Nolan Jones , who was shifted a had a long way to run, which was enough for two runners to score, including Altuve from first base, to put Houston up 3-0 in the fifth inning.
Due to an errant throw and a bloop single, Allen's strong night has been reduced to a three-run outing. That's largely the case of some bad baseball luck.
Astros score first against Guardians in the fifth inning
Logan Allen has had a solid night thus far, and Jose Ramirez has helped defensively, but potentially a too-aggressive decision has given the Astros a 1-0 lead.
With two runners on and Jose Altuve at the plate, Ramirez again nearly robbed him of a hit, scooping a ball to his right, but as his weight took him into foul territory, Ramirez tried to throw him out with a high-arching throw that allowed Jeremy Pena to round third and score before Carlos Santana could throw it home from first.
Guardians, Astros update: Jose Ramirez pulls off 5-3 double play to end third inning
Jose Ramirez is having a tremendous week defensively. After pulling off a few highlight reel plays against the Yankees in New York, tonight Ramirez helped out Logan Allen out in the third inning.
Jose Altuve stepped to the plate with two runners on and one out. Altuve chopped a grounder to third, where Ramirez scooped it, touched the base and made the throw to first to end the inning.
It's still scoreless.
Guardians, Astros score: Mauricio Dubon throws out two runners from left field
The Guardians had a scoreless first inning, and that's primarily due to Maurcio Dubon.
Dubon, playing left field, threw out two runners at second base — Angel Martinez and then Jose Ramirez — trying to extend singles into doubles. Instead of a couple of baserunners, Dubon cleared the deck twice to give Colton Gordon a cleaner first inning.
Below is some pregame information.
Shane Bieber injury update: Ace to be shut down for a week
The Guardians announced that Shane Bieber , rehabbing from Tommy John surgery , will be shut down for roughly a week. Bieber reported soreness after a bullpen session, l eading to his rehab outing with the RubberDucks being scratched .
Bieber met with Dr. Keith Meister, who performed the original surgery in April of 2024. Around the middle of next week, Bieber will be re-evaluated.
Catcher Austin Hedges could also be headed for the 7-day concussion injured list after being hit during Wednesday's game by Jazz Chisholm . Catching prospect Dom Nunez could be an option to take Hedges' place if he does land on the IL.
