It goes without saying that being an NBA player has its own set of advantages. Playing the game you (supposedly) love, earning more than an average, or even more than that, and having the privilege of living the kind of lifestyle most can only dream of. However, being the top dog in the Association comes with a whole different type of attention, and the late Kobe Bryant knew this all too well.
During the 2000s, he was arguably the greatest player in the world, and his presence drew attention from everyone, from die-hard fans to, well, Hollywood royalty.
One of those moments happened on March 4th, 2005, when the Dallas Mavericks visited the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center. As usual, the courtside seats were packed with celebrities, but there was one that stood out a bit more that night: Halle Berry.
Halle Berry was checking out Kobe
At that time, Berry was the alpha and omega of the Hollywood world. From James Bond to Catwoman, she'd starred in every kind of blockbuster imaginable and had just about every man in America (and beyond) drooling at her feet. Yet that night, sitting just a few feet away from the Lakers' bench, the Oscar-winning actress looked more like a star-struck fan than anything else.
Late in the fourth quarter, as the game was winding down, Berry couldn't help but check out the Black Mamba from head to toe, literally, and when the sideline reporter approached her for a quick chat, she didn't shy away from revealing who had her undivided attention.
"I'm a big Laker fan, that's for sure. A big Laker fan," the iconic actress said in her sideline interview.
"Umm… Kobe," Berry said while looking directly at the camera, like she was trying to send some kind of subliminal message to the Purple and Gold superstar.
"And Caron Butler ," she added. " These are cool seats. I love them."
Bryant delivered a show for the actress
Whether she was a Laker fan, a Kobe fan, or a little bit of both — that's up to you to decide. What's not up for debate, though, is that the Black Mamba didn't disappoint. In that particular game, with Halle Berry sitting just a few feet away, Bryant delivered in his usual stone cold fashion. He dropped a 40-piece, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out six assists to power his Lakers to defend his home court in front of all the celebrities. The crowd was electric, the lights were bright, and Kobe, as always, was the center of it all.
It's well-known that his former Tinseltown teammate, Shaquille O'Neal, often admitted he liked to "put on a little extra show" when there were celebrities, especially actresses, sitting courtside.
Maybe Kobe did too, just in a quieter, more composed manner. Either way, Halle Berry definitely got to see her favorite player on full display that night, and by the look in her eyes, she knew she was watching greatness up close, and she left the Staples Center impressed.
