Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris Sr. are known for everything except major basketball accomplishments. That's not to say they didn't have respectable careers, Marcus especially, who at one point averaged 19.6 points and 5.4 rebounds on 43.9 percent shooting from deep.
He played a solid 13 seasons in the league, building a reputation as a reliable secondary scorer and a guy who could take pressure off his team's superstars. Markieff, on the other hand, was much more limited offensively and built his reputation mostly on tough, physical defense, often right on the edge of a foul.
Even though he looked decent offensively early in his career, everything changed after his incident with Nikola Jokic in the Miami Heat– Denver Nuggets 2021 matchup. After an unnecessarily hard foul, Nikola shoved Markieff in the back, and the 6-foot-8 forward missed the rest of the season with a neck injury.
After that game, there was beef on social media about "getting Jokic back when the time comes," but once Jokic's brothers responded on X, warning them that trying anything wouldn't end well, everything went silent... Until today.
"That sh-t a landslide. No disrespect to them, but motherf-ckers see them and be like goddamn, motherf-ckers are big as sh-t, right? But if y'all see us, I'm like I'm 6-foot-6, 280. Athletic version to these big-chested motherf-ckers that can't move. I'll punch both of these n in their chest. If we talking boxing, I'm putting hands on them n-ggas easy, like it ain't even a question," the Morris twins said on their Twitch account.
Things escalated on X
The truth is that, despite being solid basketball players, the Morris twins were already disliked by much of the NBA fanbase because of their rough, sometimes dirty style of play, constantly provoking opponents and getting in their faces.
But once one of them ran into someone who matched their physicality, a 6-foot-11, 285-pound center from Serbia, many felt they finally "got what they deserved."
And indeed, Jokic, usually calm and rarely involved in on-court altercations, wanted to show that people from his part of the world fear no one. After the game, there were threats on X, but everything cooled down once Nemanja and Strahinja Jokic, both former basketball players and imposing figures, sent out their warning.
Strahinja, in particular, became viral after the image standing next to Nikola, making a 285-pound MVP look small. Even though the Morris brothers were known for their toughness, after that incident, they called Jokic's move dirty .
"Yeah, it's a dirty hit. I made a basketball move, I stretched my arm and made it known I'm coming for it; it was just a hard foul. Him hitting me from the back was dirty. I walked back to the other side of the court. I had no idea he was going to hit me. It was like I was in a car accident, honestly," Morris said .
The Morris twins didn't learn their lesson
Markieff may be right that it wasn't a particularly dangerous foul, but it was still unnecessary at midcourt, and it clearly triggered the 2023 NBA champion. Although they met several times afterward, things remained calm and professional on both sides.
But now, from the comfort of their home, the Morris twins are once again stirring up a situation that had seemingly settled down. If these comments reach the Jokic brothers, they definitely won't take them lightly, and things could heat up again.
Who knows, after comments that sound more like threats, this might escalate to an entirely new level. And we've already seen once before how badly that kind of situation can end for the U.S. brothers.
