The Jacksonville Jaguars have released veteran safety Darnell Savage , the team announced Tuesday afternoon.
Savage's release comes after he was unable to secure a starting role with the defense after signing a three-year, $21.75 million contract with the team last offseason . The contract included $12.5 million in fully guaranteed money and a $5 million signing bonus.
Savage started and played in 13 games for Jacksonville last season. He posted 51 total tackles (40 solos), six pass breakups and one interception.
Savage's role with the franchise this season was as a reserve safety, and he primarily played in dime packages, when six defensive backs are on the field.
Savage has played on 36% of the team's defensive snaps this year with just 48 snaps total. He was not a contributor to special teams in either season with Jacksonville, playing seven snaps in 2024 and zero through two games in 2025.
Savage was asked about his role with the franchise ahead of Week 1. He took the high road.
"Just be a pro," Savage said. "At the end of the day, you continue to come to work and do what you can to help the team win. That's the main goal. Time and experience play a pivotal role in how you handle things when adversity comes up. I'll be fine."
Through two games this year, Savage accounted for one tackle.
The Jaguars drafted two safeties in the 2025 NFL Draft , including Caleb Ransaw and Rayuan Lane III in the third and sixth rounds, respectively. Their additions and the improved play from safeties like Andrew Wingard and Antonio Johnson , alongside Lane's special teams ability, likely made Savage expendable.
The team also reportedly put in a claim for former Baltimore Ravens safety Beau Brade , who was claimed by the New York Giants .
