Patrick Beverley has long been known for his short fuse and the stint with the Milwaukee Bucks only reinforced that reputation. He once fired a ball back at a heckling fan he felt crossed the line.
Jason Williams , his co-host on "Hoopin' N' Hollerin'," isn't endorsing violence. Still, he does think Beverley shouldn't just let it slide. If he runs into that same foul-mouthed fan again, J-Will urges Beverley to have a stab at it.
"You gotta throw (the ball) a little harder," Williams told PatBev if he re-encounters the same situation. "If it's the same dude? Yeah, you gotta throw it a bit harder… You gotta wind that s一up behind the bike. Ski!"
Something needs to be done about fans who take it too far
Williams played 12 years in the NBA, so he was not exactly a stranger to heckling fans. White Chocolate understands it's a part of the whole basketball fandom 一 they cheer for their teams and jeer the others.
On the part of the players, they need to be the consummate pros and role models, and just let things go. However, J-Will also believes a line should be drawn somewhere.
"Nah, f一 that (being a pro at all times)," Williams said with a straight face. "You threw the ball at buddy. What did buddy say to you? He said some foul s一. What makes that right? And if you don't throw the ball at him, nobody knows he said something to you. You go to your grave with that."
For Williams, retaliating against someone who disrespected you is part of the job. You need to get that out of your chest before you take it out on somebody, or worse, your wife and family.
"I'm not saying what you did was right. What I'm saying is sometimes, s一 needs to be done just to make you feel better," Williams continued. "That's not right. At the end of the day, you're human just like they are. You go through s一 just like you go through s一. What gives them the right to say s一 to you and you ain't allowed to do s一 to them?"
The damage has been done
The ball-throwing incident happened in Game 6 of the first-round series between PatBev's Bucks and the Indiana Pacers . Beverley darted the basketball multiple times in the direction of a fan as he was sitting on the bench with over two minutes left of the blowout contest.
Bev was eventually suspended and lost approximately $90,000 in salary as a result of the punishment. Interestingly, that's the last NBA game Beverley appeared in. He suspects it has everything to do with the incident, and teams will never give him another chance because of it.
"That's the only reason why I'm out.. I feel like it's a big reason why (teams would say), 'Ah, we don't wanna deal with a lot of that.' You feel me? Which is fair," Mr. 94 Feet opined.
Whether Beverley takes J-Will's advice is anyone's guess. He's saying the right things now and insists he learned from the incident, but his feisty personality will occasionally resurface.
However, that does not mean Beverley is right or wrong. Basketball is an emotional game, and some, like Pat Bev, just happen to wear their heart on their sleeve.
