- What we learned about Jacksonville Jaguars in their 31-28 MNF win over Kansas City Chiefs
Four questions and answers about the Jacksonville Jaguars from their 31-28 win Monday night over the Kansas City Chiefs :
Question:Good decision or bad decision by Jaguars coach Liam Coen to call a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-goal from the 1?
Answer:Both. A good decision to go for it trailing 7-0 on the third play of the second quarter. The Chiefs' offense was rolling and Coen knew field goals wouldn't matter much.
But the play call should be criticized. Lawrence lined up under center and tight end Brenton Strange positioned himself to be the "pusher." Instead, Lawrence left his feet and linebacker Nick Bolton forced a fumble before Lawrence could extend the football across the goal-line.
Rookie running back/wrecking ball Bhayshul Tuten was in the game and the smart play would have been to let him blast his way through the Chiefs' line for the touchdown.
Alas, Lawrence was stopped and the Chiefs made things worse by driving 97 yards (the longest such drive allowed by the Jaguars this year) to make it 14-0.
Question:What was the key play on the Jaguars' first-half touchdown drive, which cut the Chiefs' lead to 14-7 with 2:38 left in the first half?
Answer:The key play was a gift.
On third-and-15, after a false start by the Jaguars, Lawrence threw low and wide of receiver Brian Thomas Jr. But cornerback Jaylen Watson was called for a pass interference call.
Given a fresh set of downs, the Jaguars managed their way down the field, scoring on Lawrence's 3-yard touchdown pass to receiver Parker Washington .
Lawrence scrambled for 16 yards on second-and-9, threw 12 yards to receiver Travis Hunter on second-and-11 and scrambled for 14 yards on third-and-5 to set up the drive.
Question:How was Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd able to set a franchise record with a 99-yard interception return touchdown ?
Answer:Lloyd faked a blitz on the second-and-goal play from the 2-yard line.
Mahomes may not have seen Lloyd when he dropped into coverage. Lloyd picked off the pass at the 1 and was off to the races.
Tight end Travis Kelce missed a tackle at the 2.
Mahomes missed a tackle at the 13.
Running back Kareem Hunt missed a tackle at the 28.
And Lloyd, the length-of-the-field run having gassed him, managed to get into the end zone ahead of similarly winded receivers Tyquan Thorton and Hollywood Brown for the Jaguars' first lead (21-14).
Question:How did the Jaguars win it?
Answer: Three monster plays from Lawrence .
He threw a 33-yard pass to Thomas, followed by a 13-yard dart to Dyami Brown .
On third-and-13 from the 14, the Jaguars got a free set of downs due to a pass interference penalty.
And on the winner, Lawrence scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown after right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on Lawrence's foot. He stumbled twice, got up off the ground and managed to score his second rushing touchdown of the game.
