The North Carolina Tar Heels continued their early-season home slate on Friday night , welcoming the NC Central Eagles from nearby Durham for a late tip-off.
NCCU played UNC close late into the first half, trailing by six points with just over three minutes to go. North Carolina then took a 39-24 lead into halftime.
The Tar Heels then came out of their locker room firing, riding a 12-2 run en route to a dominant, 97-53 victory.
Caleb Wilson took over for North Carolina once again, recording his fourth double-double in as many games with a 21-point, 13-rebound outing. Henri Veesaar secured a double-double of his own, finishing with 12 points and 11 boards. The Wilson-Veesaar connection worked all night, whether finding each other for alley-oops or after missed baskets.
UNC's defense suffocated NCCU (1-4) throughout Friday night, holding the visiting Eagles to just 16 makes on 66 attempts (24.2 percent). The Tar Heels kept diving for loose balls, played extremely well in the fastbreak (13-0 advantage) and controlled the Eagles in virtually every aspect.
Friday was a great chance for Hubert Davis to empty his bench and learn more about its roster depth. 12 different players scored for UNC, led by 21 points from Wilson. Every Tar Heel starter played a minimum 21 minutes, anchored by a game-high 29 from Wilson.
The Tar Heels are back in the Dean Dome on Tuesday, hosting Navy for a 7 p.m. tip. North Carolina, currently sitting at 4-0, is in a great position to continue its early-season dominance as non-conference play gets tougher.
