More details behind Tuesday's shocking release of Carolina Panthers linebacker Josey Jewell have emerged.
Per the team's official statement on the decision, Jewell is still experiencing concussion symptoms stemming from his injury in Carolina's Week 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals this past season. The Panthers noted that the 30-year-old defender does hope to return at some point, but the release will now allow him to prioritize his health and recovery.
However, according to Joe Person of The Athletic , a release was not the organization's only option.
Person writes that Jewell and the Panthers considered restructuring his contract, which began in 2024 as a three-year deal worth up to $22.75 million. Jewell was in line to make $4.7 million in 2025, with $2 million guaranteed.
But that, obviously, did not end up being the case.
Instead, Jewell's release will open up $3.4 million in salary cap space and trigger a $4.3 million hit in dead space. The move also leaves the Panthers even thinner at the inside linebacker position, with 2024 third-round pick Trevin Wallace and free-agent signee Christian Rozeboom as the projected starters.
Jewell, who did participate in non-contact drills during spring workouts, has remained in concussion protocol.
