The first stage of the player acquisition period of the NFL offseason is here.
The league's free agency period started at noon Monday. That's when the official "negotiation window" opened up for teams to reach out to players' agents and start talking about and reaching agreement on deals.
None of those deals can be officially signed until the new league year begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The same holds true for any trades that may be reached.
Follow along here through the first week of the NFL free agency period as the Cleveland Browns look to make moves to bolster their roster :
Thursday, March 13 updates
Joe Flacco visiting New York Giants
Russell Wilson isn't the only quarterback who the Browns have either visited with or have been connected with who is also visiting with the New York Giants. Joe Flacco is also reportedly visiting the Giants, according to ESPN's Field Yates.
Flacco helped the Browns make the playoffs in 2023 when he was signed in November and went 4-1 in December. He played for the Indianapolis Colts last year.
Russell Wilson visits Browns as QB free-agent list dwindles
Russell Wilson, who spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers , is scheduled to visit the Browns on Thursday. This may be their best shot at landing a solid starter for the upcoming season, as the list of quarterbacks available on the market is drying up with Mac Jones having signed with the 49ers on Wednesday.
Here's the list of notable quarterbacks on the market:
-
Russell Wilson
-
Joe Flacco
Browns finalize deal for DT Maliek Collins
The defensive tackle spot for the Browns needed a boost in talent. They hope they found an answer through free agency.
The Browns are signing defensive tackle Maliek Collins to a two-year, $20 million deal, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal. Collins had been released by the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday, along with fellow defensive tackle Javon Hargraves, who eventually signed with the Minnesota Vikings .
The deal was set up on Wednesday, per Collins' agent, Drew Rosenhaus. However, it wasn't finalized on the Browns' end until Thursday, a league source confirmed.
The Browns informed defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson on Monday they were releasing him with a post-June 1 designation, and Tomlinson agreed to a deal with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday evening. That left vetern Shelby Harris , along with a myriad of relatively young and/or inexperienced players — led by 2024 second-round pick Mike Hall Jr., who's coming off a knee injury in the season finale, and 2024 seventh-round pick Jowon Briggs — as the core of their defensive tackle group.
Wednesday, March 12 updates
Browns special teamer D'Anthony Bell visiting with Seattle Seahawks
A key piece of the Browns' special teams the last two seasons is looking elsewhere after not being tendered by the team. Safety D'Anthony Bell is expected to visit with the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Bell, originally an undrafted free agent in 2022 out of West Florida, led the Browns with 15 special-teams tackles last season. He also recorded four tackles at safety.
DT Maliek Collins to sign with Browns, but source denies it's done yet
The Browns are waiting for the San Francisco 49ers to officially release defensive tackle Maliek Collins. At that time, they'll be able to sign the 29-year-old Collins to a two-year, $20 million deal, with $13 million of that guaranteed, per reports.
A league source, though, told the Beacon Journal the deal's not yet done.
Collins had five sacks and two fumble recoveries in 17 games for San Francisco last season. He had 33 tackles, 12 quarterbacks hits and five tackles for loss.
QB Russell Wilson to visit Browns on Thursday
The Browns already acquired one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' former starting quarterbacks. Could they be trying to land another one to be their starter next season?
A league source has confirmed for the Beacon Journal that free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson will be in Berea on Thursday for a visit. Wilson is then expected to also visit with the New York Giants on Friday.
The Browns acquired Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick (No. 164 overall) in a trade that was made official on Wednesday. Pickett started 24 games between 2022-23 for the Steelers after being taken by them in the first round of the 2022 draft.
Wilson, 36, started the final 11 regular-season games and the AFC wild card game loss to the Baltimore Ravens for Pittsburgh last season after being sidelined with a calf injury. The Steelers won six of his first seven starts before losing the last five, including the playoff game.
Another QB off market: Marcus Mariota re-signs with Washington Commanders
Another potential bridge quarterback for the Browns isn't there anymore. Marcus Mariota, who spent last season as the backup in Washington for rookie Jayden Daniels , is returning to the Commanders on a one-year deal, per reports.
Former Browns special teams ace Mike Ford Jr. signs with Atlanta Falcons
Mike Ford Jr. was one of the best special-teams players on the Browns each of the last two seasons. However, he'll look to do the same next season in a different, yet familiar place.
Ford is signing a two-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. He played for the Falcons in 2022 prior to originally signing with Cleveland.
Ford had seven special-teams tackles last season, fourth on the Browns. He also had six tackles while playing cornerback.

Deals can become official at 4 p.m. Wednesday with new league year
The last two days, for all of the talk, don't hold any official weight. Even agreements that have been public can flip in a moment's notice because they're not done deals yet.
That changes when the new NFL league year begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday. At that time, all deals, be it free-agent agreements or trades, can be officially signed, consummated and announced.
Tuesday, March 11 updates
Cleveland Browns re-signing LB Devin Bush
The Browns liked what they saw out of linebacker Devin Bush so much in 2024, they're bringing him back for next season. A league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal Bush will be signing a one-year, $3.25 million deal to return to Cleveland.
Bush, the former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the University of Michigan, played well in his first season in Cleveland. He played in 16 games with 10 starts, finishing fourth on the team in tackles with 74 total, including 44 solo stops.
It was the most games Bush had played in a season since playing all 17 in 2022, his final year with the Steelers. He had played in 13 with three starts with the Seattle Seahawks in 2023.
Former Browns QB Jacoby Brissett signing with Arizona Cardinals
Another one is off the list. Former Browns and New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett, seen as a potential bridge quarterback for the Browns, is signing with the Arizona Cardinals, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Brissett will back up Kyler Murray in Arizona. He'll also reunite with Drew Petzing, the Cardinals offensive coordinator who was his quarterbacks coach in Cleveland in 2022.
Former Bucs edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka signing with Browns
Cleveland is signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneer outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to a one-year deal, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal. The deal, first reported by Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, is worth $4.75 million.
Tryon-Shoyinka, who turns 26 on April 30, was the last pick of the first round of the 2021 NFL draft out of the University of Washington. While he played outside linebacker in the Buccaneers' 3-4 scheme, he will provide help off the edge in Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz's defense.
Over four seasons with the Bucs, Tryon-Shoyinka recorded 15 sacks and 135 total pressures in 66 career regular-season games, including 45 starts. He also had one sack in six playoff games, with one playoff start.
Daniel Jones is heading to the Indianapolis Colts on 1-year deal
Cross another one off the quarterback list. Daniel Jones will be signing a one-year deal worth up to $17.7 million with the Indianapolis Colts.
Jones was reportedly choosing between the Colts and the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent the end of last season after being cut by the New York Giants. The Browns had some interest in him, but there wasn't enough to ignite a deal.
Jones will compete with third-year pro Anthony Richardson for the starting job in Indianapolis.

Monday, March 10 updates
Cleveland Browns add veteran OT Cornelius Lucas in late-night deal
The Browns are adding a veteran offensive tackle thanks to a late-night deal. Cornelius Lucas has agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $10 million, his agent Dan Saffron confirmed to the Beacon Journal.
Lucas, 33, has played in 129 regular-season games over 11 years with the Detroit Lions , Los Angeles Rams , New Orleans Saints , Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders. He's spent the last five years in Washington, including playing 14 regular-season games and three playoff games for the NFC runner-ups.
Former Browns OT James Hudson III to sign with New York Giants
The first of the Browns free agents went off the board. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that offensive tackle James Hudson III will sign with the New York Giants.
Hudson ended last season on injured reserve after surgery for a shoulder injury. However, the former 2021 fourth-round pick out of Cincinnati was a key swing tackle in his time in Cleveland with several starts, most notably at right tackle in place of both Jack Conklin and Dawand Jones .
Cleveland Browns to release DT Dalvin Tomlinson as post-June 1 cut
The Browns will be releasing defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal.
Tomlinson, who turned 31 on Feb. 28, would be a $5,042,000 dead-money hit on the cap as a post-June 1 release. However, the Browns will save $6,411,765 on the cap, according to OverTheCap.com.
The former University of Alabama product, who has played with three teams — the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and Browns — over his first eight seasons in the league, was entering the final year of his contract. He was due a $3 million base salary and was going to be a $11,453,765 cap hit this season, but none of the money was guaranteed.
Cleveland Browns trade DTR to Philadelphia Eagles for QB Kenny Pickett
Cleveland are acquiring Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick in this April's draft, a league source tells the Beacon Journal. The fifth-round pick will be No. 165 overall, which they received from the Detroit Lions last November in the Za'Darius Smith trade.
The Browns, with Thompson-Robinson now in Philadelphia and Deshaun Watson recovering from a second Achilles surgery, will still be in search of another veteran quarterback to add to the roster and compete for the starting job. There's also the likelihood they'll be adding one through the draft, be it at No. 2 overall or with a later pick.
Justin Fields lands with the New York Jets
The rumblings have come true. Justin Fields will be on his way from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the New York Jets.
Fields is getting a two-year deal worth $40 million. There is $30 million of that guaranteed.
Sam Darnold heading to Seattle Seahawks to be their QB
The top free-agent quarterback has found a landing spot in the Pacific Northwest. Sam Darnold is heading to the Seattle Seahawks, who had dealt Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday night.
The deal for Darnold, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, is three years and $100.5 million. That includes $55 million guaranteed.
LT Dan Moore Jr. gets big dollars from Tennessee Titans
The price for left tackles on the open market is quite eye-opening a little more than an hour into the negotiation period. The proof is the deal former Steelers left tackle Dan Moore Jr. has reportedly agreed to with the Tennessee Titans.
Moore, according to multiple reports, will receive a four-year, $82 million deal, with $50 million guaranteed.
Jimmy Garoppolo re-signing with Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are keeping another quarterback off the market. Multiple reports have stated that the Rams are keeping Jimmy Garoppolo as Matthew Stafford 's backup on a 1-year deal worth $11 million.
Justin Fields either QB1 in Pittsburgh or he's heading elsewhere
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported today that Justin Fields isn't running back what he did last year for the Pittsburgh Steelers. If he's going to stay in Pittsburgh, he's going to be the starter.
That continues to track toward the former Ohio State Buckeye potentially going elsewhere. The Jets remain the likely landing spot if it's not Pittsburgh.
NFL free agency negotiation period now open
It's after noon and teams can officially negotiate deals with players.
Aaron Rodgers adds Pittsburgh Steelers to list of suitors
The list of teams interested in 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers isn't short. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it now includes the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers have also been linked to Sam Darnold, as well as their own two free-agent quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Rodgers' list of reported suitors includes the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and, now, the Steelers.
Sunday, March 9 updates
Pittsburgh Steelers acquire WR DK Metcalf from Seattle Seahawks
The Pittsburgh Steelers are acquiring wide receiver DK Metcalf in a trade from the Seattle Seahawks, per multiple reports. The Steelers are also giving Metcalf a five-year, $150 million contract with the deal.
Pittsburgh is giving up a second round pick in April's draft. The teams are also flipping picks in the sixth and seventh rounds this year.
Sam Darnold on radar for Pittsburgh Steelers
Sam Darnold seems to be the biggest target on the quarterback market at the start of the week. He could be the target of an AFC North team, and not just the Browns.
The Athletic's Diana Rossini reported Sunday that the Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in Darnold. The Seattle Seahawks have been another team front and center for the quarterback, who had a career renaissance in Minnesota last year.
WR Davante Adams signs with Los Angeles Rams
Wide receiver was a position it never felt like was going to be a big-ticket free-agent pursuit for the Browns. Nevertheless, one of the top targets on the market was taken off on Sunday when the Los Angeles Rams agreed to terms with former New York Jet Davante Adams.
Adams agreed to a two-year deal with the Rams. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal's worth $46 million, with $26 million guaranteed.
Former Browns DE Za'Darius Smith released by Detroit Lions
A familiar face is on the market if the Browns are looking for older pass-rush help. The Detroit Lions, according to multiple reports, are releasing defensive end Za'Darius Smith.
Smith, 32, started last season with the Browns, his second year in Cleveland after having been traded there by the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 then re-signing in 2024. However, he was dealt to the Lions at the deadline last November, where he had four sacks in eight regular-season games for the NFC North champions.
Smith had five sacks in nine games with the Browns before the trade in 2024. He had 5.5 sacks in his first season in Cleveland, and has 69 over a 10-year career that includes stops with the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers , Vikings, Browns and Lions.
Myles Garrett 's new deal and impact on Cleveland Browns 2025 salary cap
The Browns and defensive end Myles Garrett ended their standoff on Sunday with the announcement of a new four-year extension that will keep him in Cleveland through the 2030 season. The deal makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history with an average annual value of $40 million.
However, it doesn't impact the Browns' salary cap for the upcoming season. Garrett had already gone through a contract restructuring in 2023 that converted most of his salary for the 2025 season into a signing bonus, so he'll remain a cap hit of $19,722,120 for the season.

Saturday, March 8 updates
New Orleans Saints re-work deal for QB Derek Carr
It was always a long-shot that the Saints would move on from quarterback Derek Carr. There was too much money tied up into him.
On Saturday, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Saints tried to ease the salary-cap burden by converting most of the money into a signing bonus. Carr will still receive all of the $40 million he is owed.
Baltimore Ravens retain All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley
The Baltimore Ravens kept one of the best left tackles in football from getting onto the open free-agent market. Ronnie Stanley agreed to a new three-year deal with the Ravens, the team announced Saturday afternoon.
According to multiple reports, the deal is worth $60 million, with $44 of that guaranteed. Stanley is a two-time Pro Bowler and a one-time All-Pro selection.
Aaron Rodgers pulling a Brett Favre with Minnesota Vikings?
Aaron Rodgers still wants to play football despite being 41. There's a possibility for him to take a similar path after his Green Bay Packers career as his predecessor, Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
Like Favre, Rodgers went from the Packers to the New York Jets. Now, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, Rodgers could do the same as Favre did after he left the Jets, which is to land with the Packers' hated NFC North rivals, the Minnesota Vikings.
Both NFL "insiders" said the Vikings are one of the teams potentially in on the quarterback, who's a year removed from Achilles surgery. The New York Giants have also been mentioned for Rodgers as a potential landing spot.
Any room for Cleveland Browns on NFL QB free agent carousel?
Two days before the opening of the free agency negotiation period at noon Monday, and there are questions about where the Browns fit into the musical chairs about to commence with various quarterbacks. A tweet by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport laid out a situation involving some of the biggest names on the market, and none are connected to Cleveland.
Rapoport links Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks, while Daniel Jones has the Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts at the top of the list of potential suitors. Aaron Rodgers is linked to the New York Giants and Vikings, while Justin Fields' "strong market" includes staying in Pittsburgh or the New York Jets.
Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings going their separate ways?
The domino effect when it comes to quarterbacks may have already started thanks to the stunning Geno Smith trade Friday night. One of the biggest is that Sam Darnold, whom some thought may re-sign with the Minnesota Vikings after last year's breakthrough season, is likely on the move.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Saturday morning that Darnold is "not expected to return to the Vikings." Minnesota is, according to him, "focused on other options" at quarterback.
Among the options Pelissero mentioned was Daniel Jones, who signed with the Vikings last season after the New York Giants cut him.
Friday, March 7 updates
Are New York Jets targeting Justin Fields at quarterback?
Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, who spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been seen as one of the potential free-agent targets for the Browns. Fields, though, apparently has another quarterback-starved franchise eyeing him.
According to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, the Jets are very interesting in Fields. In Schultz's words, they are "high" on Fields and "believe his best football is ahead of him."
Schultz also said the Steelers have "maintained an open dialogue" with both Fields and Russell Wilson, who started a majority of their games last season. Pittsburgh is still open, according to Schultz, to keeping one.
Seattle Seahawks trading QB Geno Smith to Las Vegas Raiders
A Friday night bombshell — Geno Smith is being traded by the Seattle Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a third-round draft pick, per multiple reports.
Smith has one year and $25 million left on his contract. He's going to be reunited with Pete Carroll, his former coach in Seattle.
The move also removes one quarterback from the picture as the Browns try to land a veteran. Cleveland does play at Las Vegas in 2025.
Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins meets with owner Arthur Blank on future
The first domino that may have to fall to ultimately lead Kirk Cousins to another team, including the Browns, appears to have taken place. Whether it knocks over the rest remains to be seen.
The MMQB's Albert Breer reported Friday afternoon that Cousins had a meeting Wednesday night with Falcons owner Arthur Blank. During that meeting, Breer reports, Cousins asked to go someplace where he can start next season.
Both Atlanta general manager Terry Fontenoit and coach Raheem Morris have said they planned on having Cousins as the backup to Michael Penix next season.
Myles Garrett doesn't get meeting with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam
It's not directly tied to free agency, but the ongoing saga involving star defensive end Myles Garrett and the Browns regarding his trade demand took another turn Friday. A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal that Garrett reached out to owner Jimmy Haslam, who refused to meet with him and instead told him to speak with general manager Andrew Berry.
Berry has said on multiple occasions that the Browns are not interested in trading the edge rusher.
When does NFL free agency officially begin?
Teams may begin negotiating with agents of players at noon Monday. They can't officially sign a deal until 4 p.m. Wednesday.
What is the official 2025 NFL salary cap?
Each team has a salary cap of $279.2 million for the 2025 league year. They must be at or under that cap by 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Where are the Cleveland Browns in relation to the 2025 salary cap?
As of Thursday afternoon, the Browns had about $12.5 million in cap space after restructuring Deshaun Watson's contract. There's likely to be a move or two more to open up a little bit more going into free agency.
