The NFL has kicked off its schedule release week with news that the Cowboys will kick off the regular season.
New head coach Brian Schottenheimer will lead his team into Philadelphia to face the defending world champions on Sept. 4, it was announced Monday morning. The game will serve as the official start to the 2025 season and the 133rd all-time meeting between the Cowboys and the rival Eagles .
The Thursday night matchup will see the Eagles unveil the banner commemorating their 40-22 win in Super Bowl LIX as part of the traditional opening-night festivities. Other events will be planned at and around Lincoln Financial Field, culminating in the NFL Kickoff game, set to begin at 8:20 p.m. ET.
The Cowboys last helped the league launch the regular season in 2021 with a date in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers . In that game, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott returned to action after a gruesome leg injury suffered 11 months prior and threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns, coming up just short in a 31-29 loss to Tom Brady and the Bucs.
This time around, Prescott will be making another return from injury, provided there are no setbacks from the partial hamstring avulsion he sustained in November.
The Week 1 NFC East battle will be a stiff test for Prescott and the Cowboys, who overhauled their coaching staff in the offseason to promote Schottenheimer to his first head coaching gig after nearly 30 years spent on the sidelines. The team had a strong draft, selecting Alabama guard Tyler Booker in the first round, and has made improvements over the offseason on both sides of the ball, most notably last week with the trade for wide receiver George Pickens . The Cowboys will be without All-Pro offensive lineman Zack Martin (who retired in February), defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (who left in free agency for Seattle ), and cornerback Jourdan Lewis (who signed with Jacksonville ).
The Cowboys lost both games in the annual series with Philadelphia last season, but they hold a 74-58 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last opened a season against one another in 2000, with the Eagles winning 41-14. That game also featured a Cowboys head coach making his NFL debut; Dave Campo would last three seasons and remains the only head coach in franchise history to leave the team with a losing record.
The remainder of the 2025 NFL regular-season schedule will be released Wednesday night, with several more select matchups to be announced in the interim.
