It took Dana Altman a few seasons to get the Oregon Ducks into the NCAA tournament, but once he did, the Ducks have been a regular fixture in March Madness with varying degrees of success.
It's been a few seasons since Oregon has reached a Sweet 16 , but this year might erase that drought. The Ducks are a 5-seed in the East Region and will go Seattle to face 12-seed Liberty on Friday . Should Oregon win that, its opponent will mostly be 4-seed Arizona assuming the Wildcats take down Akron in the first round.
Under Altman, the Ducks have reached at least the second round of the tournament every time they've been there. Their best run came in 2017 when Oregon made it all the way to the Final Four . It was the program's first Final Four since they won the first NCAA tournament in 1939.
Here's a look at Oregon's March Madness success during Altman's tenure:
2013: Sweet Sixteen
Round of 64:68-55 win over (5) Oklahoma State
Round of 32:74-57 win over (4) St. Louis
Sweet 16:77-69 loss to (2) Louisville
It was Altman's first trip to the NCAA tourney as the Duck head coach and they made a serious run into the Sweet 16 before losing a close game to the Cardinals.
2014: Round of 32
Round of 64:87-67 win over (10) BYU
Round of 32:86-77 loss to (2) Wisconsin
The 7-seeded Ducks managed to easily defeat BYU, but the 2-seeded Badgers turned out to be too much for the Ducks to handle and they headed home after the second round.
2015: Round of 32
Round of 64:79-73 win over (9) Oklahoma State
Round of 32:72-65 loss to (1) Wisconsin
Rinse and repeat. Oregon, an 8-seed, got past a good Oklahoma State team, but the 1-seed Wisconsin team outlasted the Ducks in a close affair.
2016: Elite 8
Round of 64:91-52 win over (16) Holy Cross
Round of 32:69-64 win over (8) St. Joseph's
Sweet 16:82-68 win over (4) Duke
Elite 8:80-68 loss to (2) Oklahoma
It was Oregon's best run in the tournament since Altman came to Eugene with a win over Duke being the highlight. Unfortunately, the Sooners had Buddy Hield and the Ducks did not. But the ingredients were there for something special.
2017: Final 4
Round of 64:93-77 win over (14) Iona
Round of 32:75-72 win over (11) Rhode Island
Sweet 16:69-68 win over (7) Michigan
Elite 8:74-60 win over (1) Kansas
Final 4:77-76 loss to (1) North Carolina
That something special was realized the next year as the Ducks made a magical run to the Final Four despite missing center Chris Boucher for the tournament. Oregon played point for point with North Carolina before the Tar Heels got a late rebound to seal the win. The Ducks have to feel as if the national title slipped through their fingers even though Gonzaga would have put up one heck of a fight.
2019: Sweet Sixteen
Round of 64:72-54 win over (5) Wisconsin
Round of 32:73-54 win over (13) UC-Irvine
Sweet 16:53-49 loss to (1) Virginia
The Ducks missed the tournament in 2018, but returned the following season, once again losing to the eventual national champion Cavaliers .
2021: Sweet Sixteen
Round of 64:No contest (Covid) vs VCU
Round of 32:95-80 win over (2) Iowa
Sweet 16:82-68 loss to (6) USC
In one of the strangest tournaments in history, Oregon played just one game to advance to the Sweet 16 before going down to Pac-12 foe USC.
2024: Round of 32
Round of 64:87-73 win over (6) South Carolina
Round of 32:86-73 loss to (3) Creighton (2 OT)
In one of the few times Oregon feels line that they may have underachieved in the tournament, Creighton bounced the Ducks out in the second round.
