Derrick Harmon was one of those portal transfers that worked out as well as it could have for the Oregon Ducks .
Harmon was an outstanding and productive player for the Oregon Ducks during his one season, and as a result, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 21 pick of the 1st round of the NFL draft on Thursday.
With his first-round selection , Harmon continued Oregon's streak of first-round picks to five years, dating back to 2020 with QB Justin Herbert , who the Los Angeles Chargers selected at No. 6 overall. That was followed by Penei Sewell 's selection by the Detroit Lions at No. 7 in 2021, Kayvon Thibodeaux 's selection by the New York Giants at No. 5 in 2022, Christian Gonzalez 's selection by the New England Patriots at No. 17 in 2023, and Bo Nix 's selection by the Denver Broncos at No. 12 in 2024.
Coming out of Michigan State, Harmon proved early on that he was a perfect fit for a Dan Lanning defense. The only thing that could have been better for both sides would be if Harmon were a Duck for another season or two.
In his short time at Oregon in 2024, Harmon had 45 tackles, 11 for loss, and five sacks, all career highs. He also had two fumble recoveries, including one big forced fumble and recovery in the 32-31 win over Ohio State inside a packed Autzen Stadium in what many think was the game of the year for the Ducks.
For his career — three years as a Spartan and one as a Duck — Harmon had 116 tackles, 18 for loss, and 8.5 sacks to go along with three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, Harmon will definitely help the Steelers defensive line. At Oregon, he drew the attention of the offensive line, drawing double teams, which opened the door for players such as Jordan Burch and Matayo Uiagalelei to beat single coverage and make a play on the quarterback.
