This is the type of thing that it's better if it happens now rather than later in the season.
The Oregon Ducks men's basketball announced that starting point guard Jackson Shelstad has sustained a broken right hand in practice and that he is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. While it's never ideal to suffer an injury, the Ducks are fortunate this occurred when it did.
Shelstad earned All-Big Ten third team honors last season as a sophomore after starting 35 games for the Ducks, averaging 13.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and one steal per game.
It may be point guard by committee in the early going as Oregon doesn't have another true point guard on the roster, or at least no one with Shelstad's talent and skill set. Hopefully, he recovers quickly and returns closer to that four-week mark rather than the six weeks.
The Ducks open the season in three weeks on Oct. 24 with an exhibition game with Utah at Matthew Knight Arena before heading down to Stanford for one more exhibition Oct. 30.
Oregon is probably hoping Shelstad is 100 percent for the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, beginning on Nov. 24, where the Ducks will play Auburn and San Diego, with a third game also on the schedule.
