Chandler Parsons says the Dallas Mavericks ' point guard experiment continues to be a disaster, with the Mavs falling to 2-5 on the early season after losing to the Houston Rockets the last time out. With the loss, Dallas is now next to last in the Western Conference team standings, with only the 0-6 New Orleans Pelicans below them.
According to Parsons, the Mavs had a true point guard, Ryan Nembhard , available to play against the Rockets. Yet despite their offense sputtering once again, head coach Jason Kidd gave Nemhard a DNP and continued to utilize 2025 top draft pick Cooper Flagg as a point guard.
"Their offense is worse than the Wizards . It's the worst offense in the NBA. The Nets don't have a win, and their offense is better than the Dallas Mavericks ' offense. You gotta change something, and it's probably the point guard position," Parsons exclaimed.
The Mavs rank dead last in offensive rating
Parsons says he understands what Kidd is trying to do with Flagg, and if there's someone out there who can transform Coop into a playmaker, it's J-Kidd himself. However, it's also obvious that the ploy is not working. Not only is the rookie struggling with his shot, but the Mavs' offense has fallen deep into the abyss as well.
At 103.6 points per 100 possessions after Monday's games, the Mavs rank 30th among 30 teams in offensive rating, with the Wizards slightly better than them at No. 29, scoring 105.3 points per 100 possessions. The winless Nets are even ten points per 100 possessions better than them at 113.0.
But instead of pulling Flagg out of the starting PG role, the rumor in "Big D" is that Klay Thompson might be taken out of the starting lineup due to his struggles. Klay is averaging 8.1 points per game on 32.8 percent field goal shooting and 27.5 percent 3-point shooting. Parsons says that is not the solution.
" Klay Thompson , I'm not ready to move him to the bench. He's got to continue to shoot. I think that's going to shatter his confidence doing that, cuz he can still (shoot). He's gonna figure it out. He's one of the best shooters to ever walk the face of the earth. But they just need a set-up guy. They need to play faster. They have the size. The starting five looks cool on paper, but it's not cool and it's not working," added Chandler.
The Mavs need a PG who can make plays for Klay and the others
Parsons' "Run it Back" co-host Lou Williams agreed with him. The three-time Sixth Man of the Year winner said that "Killa Klay" is a streak shooter, and he is only as good, at least at this stage of his career, as the guy passing him the ball. If he gets the rock in his sweet spots, he's knocking down the 3's. However, if not, Thompson will struggle just as he is right now.
"A guy like Klay Thompson, who's struggling, and it looks like somebody got his Space Jam basketball and he needs it back, you've got to get those types of guys the basketball. He's a rhythm guy. So you have to make a concerted effort as a point guard, as a coach, and as a team. We got to give those guys more looks, and more opportunities," said Williams.
If we take Kidd's PG experiment out of the equation, the Mavs can start D'Angelo Russell at the one spot and let Nembhard back him up. That might solve Klay's shooting struggles, and that might get Flagg's natural game finally going.
Kidd recently argued he is playing Flagg at the point because he wants to prepare him for the postseason. But the way things are going right now, they're not even getting there.
