Just a month after winning his first Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to cut the veteran cornerback, Darius Slay , according to ESPN's Adam Schefter .
The 34-year-old had one year left on his deal and previously expressed a desire to finish his contract with the Eagles during an appearance on the " St. Brown Podcast ."
"I've got one more left (on my contract), but you know how that works," Slay said. "Whatever they want to do, I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain't, we'll see what I'm doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure."
Slay ultimately won't be given that chance as the Eagles elected to move on from the six-time Pro Bowler. Much of that decision can likely be attributed to the quick development of cornerbacks, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean , who made Slay a luxury the team couldn't afford.
He spent five years with the team, posting nine interceptions, 56 passes defended and 272 tackles after the Detroit Lions traded him to Philadelphia in March 2020 for a third and fifth-round pick.
Slay suggested he would also welcome a return to Detroit if he was cut by the Super Bowl champions.
With Zack Baun , Josh Sweat , Milton Williams and others set to hit free agency , the Eagles needed to start freeing up some cap space if they want to retain some other key players.
Philadelphia plans to designate Slay a June 1 cut, which gives the team an additional $4.3 million in cap space. However, they have to carry his $13.8 million cap hit until that time.
Slay is just the first of what will be many hard decisions for the Eagles going forward as they look to remain on top of the NFL.
