BOSTON — Instant reactions from a 4-3 loss for the Red Sox (14-13) , who watched Garrett Crochet struggle for the first time in their uniform and finished a so-so homestand with a series loss to Seattle , notching just four hits in defeat:
1) It turns out Crochet is human after all. He had his worst outing of the young season by far, matching a career-high with five walks and taking the loss. Crochet needed 110 pitches to get through five innings and faced big trouble early.
A single, walk and balk led to a Mitch Garver two-run single in the first. An inning later, two singles and a walk to lead off the inning resulted in two more runs. Crochet never looked comfortable Thursday and the results bore out that way.
Crochet struck out nine but allowed a season-high four runs on five hits in five innings. His ERA rose to 1.95.
2) Just a phenomenal all-around game from Alex Bregman, who homered in the first, hit an RBI single in the second and showed off with the glove . He's elite coming in on slow rollers and almost had a web gem in the sixth on a diving attempt against Julio Rodríguez (he was confirmed as safe on replay).
Bregman is historically a slow starter, as agent Scott Boras mentioned in his introductory press conference after joining the Red Sox . But he has been fantastic to start the year. Through 26 games (102 plate appearances), the ex-Astro has hit .320 with five homers, 10 doubles, 21 RBIs, a .393 on-base percentage and .956 OPS. He nearly tied the game in the eighth with a blast that went just foul in left, too.
3) Conversely, Rafael Devers finished a very bad homestand with another poor showing. He was 0-for-4 and was just 2-for-23 with eight walks (a good number) and seven strikeouts over the seven games at Fenway. He's in an 0-for-16 skid. His average (.194) and OPS (.658) have tanked.
4) As shaky as Crochet was (and he'll be hard on himself postgame), the Sox were only down 4-1 when he departed. But four hits against a good pitching staff isn't going to get the job done. More inconsistent offense this homestand.
5) It's hard to quantify but the game looks like it goes a little fast for Kristian Campbell in center field, especially when it comes to throws. The Red Sox will eventually figure out the defensive drop-off from Ceddanne Rafaela to Campbell isn't worth it, especially when the desire to get David Hamilton's bat (2-for-30 now) in the lineup is the driving factor.
Campbell was 0-for-4 in the loss.
6) Yes, of course, Carlos Narváez's homer that dinged Pesky's Pole and made it a one-run game in the eighth was only a homer at Fenway.
7) Liam Hendriks ' expletives are so loud they're audible in the press box of a packed ballpark of 35,655 fans (a great school vacation matinee crowd). He let them fly in a three-walk seventh inning, then escaped.
8) Don't sleep on Luis Guerrero emerging as a bullpen weapon for the Red Sox . In his first big league appearance of 2025, he needed just 19 pitches to get through two shutout innings, topping out at 97.8 mph. Most importantly, Guerrero threw strikes — on 15 of his 19 pitches.
9) The Red Sox will fly to Cleveland after the game ahead of a six-game, seven-day road trip that begins Friday. Here's the schedule (and pitching probables) for the weekend series against the Guardians at Progressive Field:
Friday, 7:10 p.m. ET — RHP Tanner Houck (0-2, 7.66 ERA) vs. RHP Ben Lively (1-2, 3.86 ERA)
Saturday, 6:10 p.m. ET — RHP Walker Buehler (3-1, 4.23 ERA) vs. LHP Logan Allen (1-1, 2.11 ERA)
Sunday, 1:40 p.m. ET — RHP Brayan Bello (1-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. RHP Gavin Williams (2-1, 4.15 ERA)
