Besides his toughness and Hall of Fame resume, Kevin Garnett was also known for his ruthless trash talk, getting under the opposing players' skin every chance he got. Whether it was on the free-throw line, coming out of the timeout, or in the middle of the action, KG didn't care.
Because of this, many people had problems with Garnett, stating that he never stopped talking and that the conversation sometimes got a bit out of hand. One of those incidents involved another Hall of Famer, Carmelo Anthony , whose wife at the time, La La, was part of the exchange between the two legends.
Back in 2013, during a regular season game in Madison Square Garden between the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks , the scene was set — the bright New York lights, the superstars, the glamour. The game was like any other battle between the two NBA giants, with tension rising with each possession, and tough defense being displayed by both teams, leading Garnett to tell Anthony that his wife tastes like "Honey Nut Cheerios."
Carmelo was done playing
It's safe to say Anthony didn't shrug off Garnett's statement, looking visibly upset, passing up every shot, and ultimately, being out of the game mentally, only thinking about one thing: how he is going to answer. Raymond Felton , who was Melo's teammate on the Knicks back then, shared the behind-the-scenes of the tense night.
" Melo didn't wanna play basketball. Melo didn't play basketball no more; he was done. I'm talking bout' when Melo got the ball, he passed it. I wanna fight. There is some things you just don't say. I don't know the whole context because Melo never told it. I don't know what [Garnett] meant by the Cheerios. There was a lot of speculations what it was for, and if it was for that, as a man, you gotta fight me. I'm a man first. It took him forever to get to the locker room. When he got into the locker room, he literally put on a Knicks sweatsuit and some Timbs, and ran back out, and went besides the bus. I saw so many security and cops down there, it was crazy. He wanted to fight, it was over. Ain't nothing nobody could say to him ," said Felton.
As soon as the game ended, Melo came into the locker room to change into his clothes, no shower, no recovery, just pure heat of the moment. He ran out to the tunnel, standing beside the Celtics' team bus, and waited for Garnett to come out to confront him. When KG came out, Melo's fire didn't stop; it only grew larger, confronting him on the scene.
The scene escalated quickly, with a large number of security guards and police officers appearing between the two, trying to de-escalate the situation. The pair would soon be split up, with each side getting their own words out.
KG's denial
A couple of years after the incident, Garnett would deny the words he said to Anthony, stating that he is more of a "Frosted Flakes man." For someone who thrived on animosity and intensity, KG rarely spoke out on the situation between the two, leaving the door open for the two to settle the beef in a gentleman's way.
With him, Melo also came out and acknowledged the mistakes he made based on his reaction and behavior. The two buried the hatchet and moved on, and while the air is cleared up, the moment is stamped as one of the most iconic in NBA history. While it brought a lot of trouble to the league at the time, the fans certainly had fun with it and were entertained.
However, both players proved their class and personal development, handling the situation years later as two adults and legends in their own right. Emotion is a part of basketball, and both players came from an era where it was displayed at the highest level, and certainly made them who they are.
