The Los Angeles Rams expect to be without one of their two starting inside linebackers when they face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Sean McVay said Monday that Omar Speights suffered a high ankle sprain in last week's loss and his status "will more likely be doubtful" to play.
The Rams do still have Nate Landman , who's playing exceptionally well, but they'll need someone else to fill in next to him. McVay is unsure whether it'll be Troy Reeder or the undrafted rookie Shaun Dolac , but the team is working through a plan for Sunday right now.
"We'll work through that," he said. "I have a lot of confidence in Troy. We have a lot of confidence in some of the different guys. Obviously, Dolac. We only have four guys on the roster, but Troy is a guy that's shown that he's more than capable, as is Shaun Dolac. We have guys on the practice squad but haven't gotten too far deep into that quite yet."
Dolac has yet to play a defensive snap this season, only seeing the field on special teams. Reeder has also been a special teams player for the Rams this year but he's gotten on the field for three defensive snaps, two of which were on Thursday.
Given his experience, Reeder might be the Rams' choice, but Dolac brings more potential to the linebacker group after standing out in a big way during the preseason. Regardless of who replaces Speights, he won't be a full-time player, but he could be on the field for around half the defensive snaps – depending on how frequently the Rams are in nickel, dime or base packages.
