With the 2028 Olympics being staged in Los Angeles, all eyes will be on Team USA. In particular, many are waiting with bated breath to see which players will answer the call and don the Stars and Stripes to help the cause of a sixth straight gold medal in Olympic basketball.
And while LeBron James, who has competed in four Olympic tournaments, claiming three gold medals and a bronze, has already ruled himself out of participating in the next Olympic tournament, one player who hasn't slammed the door shut is superstar Steph Curry .
Never say never
Battling Father Time is as futile as trying to stop a flood with a sponge. Now 37, Curry will be 40 by the time the 20208 Olympics come around. Although the 6'2" guard remains a premier player in the league, it remains to be seen what his physical condition will be three years from now. And that is exactly what Curry is considering before making a decision on his Olympic future.
"God willing, I still have the choice and the physical option to be like, I could actually impact the team…" he said on the "Mind The Game" podcast. "Never say never, but I highly doubt it. Highly doubt it. Love to be a part of the movement."
While James was essentially an Olympic veteran in 2024, Curry was playing in his first. However, he made it a most memorable one, averaging a team-best 14.8 points on 47.8 percent shooting from behind the arc. He actually got off to a slow start and scored in single digits in three straight games.
However, he more than made up for it with his explosive performances in the semifinals, where he had 36 points in a come-from-behind win over Nikola Jokic and Serbia, and 24 more in their thrilling win over the host, France, in the gold-medal game. After going 5-for-20 in the first four games of the tournament, he finished with a flurry, draining a combined 17 triples in his last two games.
Hard to top their 2024 gold-medal run
While Curry remains undecided, James has already made up his mind regarding the 20208 Olympics. He'll already be 43 at that time and has no desire to put his mind and body through the wringer yet again.
"You already know my answer," LeBron stated. "I will be watching it from Cabo."
LeBron asserted that it will be very difficult to top their performance in the Paris Olympics, considering they had to go through hell and back to have that gold medal around their necks. Serbia had Team USA on the ropes as they were ahead by 13, 76-63, at the start of the fourth period before LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Joel Embiid and Curry led the comeback.
In the gold-medal match, Curry cooked up some late-game heroics, draining four straight triples to secure the victory and the gold.
"We can't top what we just did," Bron emphasized. "We can't top those last two games, man. Like, we literally played France in Paris for the final — for the finals, you know? Like it would have been like in '08, like during the Redeem Team, if we played China in the final, right?"
The 2028 Olympics are still a few years away, but there's no doubt that international teams are gearing up to upset the Americans on their home soil, especially if they don't bring their very best.
