The Houston Texans are expected to sign veteran running back Nick Chubb , a move that could have implications for the Denver Broncos and fellow veteran running back J.K. Dobbins .
Dobbins, 26, visited the Broncos last week, but left without signing a contract. Mike Klis then reported that while no deal is imminent (as of last week), Dobbins remains on the team's radar. That seems to suggest that the Broncos are interested in signing him, but the two sides have not agreed on compensation.
Chubb's pending contract could come into play now.
Chubb, 29, has a projected market value of $3.3 million, according to Spotrac.com . The same website lists Dobbins' projected value at $4.1 million . Dobbins is younger and coming off a more productive 2024 campaign, and his agent will likely ask for more than what Chubb receives from the Texans .
Last year, Dobbins signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the Los Angeles Chargers worth about $1.64 million. Dobbins did "prove it," rushing for 905 yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games. He also missed four games due to injury (an unfortunate trend for his career), but Dobbins proved with L.A. that he is still a productive NFL running back.
So the Chubb situation will be worth monitoring. Whatever Houston gives Chubb will presumably be the starting point for a potential resolution in negotiations between Denver and Dobbins.
