A Texas man is facing multiple charges after allegedly threatening University of Louisville head football coach Jeff Brohm and his family, along with student-athletes on the team.
According to court records, a warrant for Brian Mandel, 38, of Corpus Christi, Texas, was entered Nov. 10 after a grand jury indicted him on six counts of terroristic threatening and one count of extortion. He pleaded not guilty in a Nov. 12 filing to the Jefferson District Court, according to court records and his bond was set at $100,000.
"We are aware of the recent indictment of an individual who issued threats directed at our head football coach, his wife and kids, members of his coaching staff and student-athletes," Louisville Athletics Director of Media Relations Rocco Gasparro said in a Nov. 10 statement. "The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community remain our highest priority."
Gasparro commended University of Louisville Police for the department's "swift and decisive" action and said threats of violence have no place in sports."Our student-athletes and coaches deserve to compete, learn and grow without fear. We are committed to supporting them and reinforcing the values of respect, integrity, and accountability that define our program," he said. "We ask our fans and community members to join us in fostering a culture of positivity and support, both on and off the field."
The case comes after Louisville lost against the California Golden Bears 29-26 in overtime Nov. 8.
