- 'Totally speechless': Carlos Santana wins new car for a dad whose son is fighting cancer
CLEVELAND — As Carlos Santana rounded the bases after his third-inning grand slam in a June 11 game against the Cincinnati Reds , neither he nor Edward Moss knew just yet that the veteran first baseman had won a brand new car for a family navigating a difficult health crisis.
Moss, a Guardians fan from Cleveland , had entered the team's Grand Slam Giveaway promotion every year since its inception more than a decade ago. Fans enter the promotion and then one is picked for each home game. If a Guardians hitter belts a grand slam during the third inning, they win a new car from Hyundai.

The Guardians-Reds game on June 11 was a day game, and, well, a bedroom needed to be painted. Moss said he normally tunes in to games, but he was busy at the time painting. It wasn't until a friend from San Diego called him after seeing the grand slam and that he was the Grand Slam Giveaway winner.
"Speechless — totally speechless, like I am now," Moss said. "I was totally in shock. I'm still in shock, really."
Edward Moss of Cleveland and his family meet Carlos Santana at Progressive Field on July 6, 2025.
After that game, Santana said he wasn't aware the grand slam had won anybody a new car, but he was excited about it once told. Moss and his family attended the July 6 Guardians-Detroit Tigers game and met Santana on the field that morning.

Moss said he won a black Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy edition . The prize came during a difficult time, but the family is glad it'll be a valuable resource.
Moss' 41-year-old son has terminal cancer, which has included countless trips to appointments and hospitals.
"We've been taking care of each other," Moss said. "I look at it as a blessing, because I really needed a car."
Moss never thought he'd actually win the promotion after entering for so many years.
Once Santana drilled a Nick Lodolo changeup over the wall, it represented a grand slam that meant a bit more than any other.

"Even bigger fan now, yes," Moss said of Santana. "I've been a fan of his since we [acquired] him."
