- UNC basketball legend named keynote speaker for Dean Dome event in August
Michael Jordan might be the greatest basketball player to walk this earth , but he's not the greatest basketball player to don a North Carolina Tar Heels uniform.
That highly-debated distinction belongs to Tyler Hansbrough , a.k.a. Psycho T, who holds UNC's all-time scoring record with 2,872 points. Hansbrough then enjoyed a 7-year NBA career, which ended in 2016 with the Charlotte Hornets , before playing overseas in China.
Though Hansbrough is known primarily for his on-court work, he just earned a pretty cool post-basketball honor. On Wednesday, UNC announced Hansbrough as the keynote speaker for its New Student Convocation on Sunday, August 17.
"We are delighted to have Tar Heel legend Tyler Hansbrough as our guest speaker," UNC chancellor Lee Roberts said. "I know he will share an inspiring message, and it's going to be a fun and exciting day for these new Tar Heels."
Hansbrough will deliver his speech inside the Dean Dome, where he terrorized North Carolina's opponents from 2005-2009.
There are too many memorable Tar Heel Hansbrough moments to count, but his 2008-2009 senior season was amongst the greatest in program history. Not only did Hansbrough average 20 points per game for the second-consecutive year, but he helped arguably the greatest UNC team ever capture its fifth national championship.
Since his retirement from professional basketball, Hansbrough dabbled in broadcasting, appearing on the ACC Network for North Carolina broadcasts. According to his Instagram page, Hansbrough is currently an active podcaster and avid pickleballer.
I wish Hansbrough's NBA career panned out, because he was a dominate force few players could slow down in college – even Gerald Henderson.
