The North Carolina Tar Heels had a golden opportunity to pick up a much-needed win against rival NC State on Wednesday night inside the Dean Dome.
Enduring the snowy, icy roads that took over Chapel Hill, UNC compiled one of its most dominating performances this season, sweeping the Wolfpack with a 97-73 obliteration.
North Carolina (16-11, 9-6 ACC) built a 28-point halftime lead, getting contributions from just about everyone while locking down defensively against a struggling State (10-16, 3-12) squad. The Tar Heels cooled off in the second half, scoring *only* 43 points, but built enough of a first-half cushion that they weren't going to lose.
UNC led by so much that head coach Hubert Davis played 13 guys Wednesday night. North Carolina shot a scorching 57.4 percent from the field: RJ Davis led all scorers with 21 points, shooting just 6-of-18, but made all eight of his free throw attempts.
Tar Heels center Ven-Allen Lubin arguably played the best amongst his teammates – if you look at his stats alone, Lubin shot 5-of-7 from the field, made all three free throw attempts and grabbed five rebounds. Seth Trimble provided a massive boost off the bench: 15 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
UNC outplayed the Wolfpack in virtually every category, but most notably in paint points (52-26) and rebounds (40-21).
I wasn't sure how North Carolina would fare with less fans in the arena. The Tar Heels gave me brief hope, even if it's only for one game, that they're hungry and can possibly embark on a season-saving run.
