- Liam Coen's Jacksonville Jaguars are different. Want proof? Watch practice on Thursdays
The NFL's unofficial constitution has been consistent ever since coaches realized battering their players in practice might just wear them out for the games.
Practice in full pads on Wednesdays.
Practice in spiders (lighter pads) on Thursdays.

Practice in helmets-only on Fridays.
A straight forward, build-up-and-then-taper-back strategy.
But not Mr. Zig, er, Jaguars coach Liam Coen .
BUILDING CONFIDENCE: Late catch must be start of something big for struggling Brian Thomas Jr.
If we've learned anything about Coen through his first training camp and three regular season games, he doesn't live in Zag Land.
Conventional wisdom is acknowledged and discussed by Coen, but not always adopted. Just because everybody does something one way doesn't mean there is only one right way.
Another exhibit was on Thursday, Sept. 4.
Watching practice, I noticed how the Jaguars were working in full pads just three days before the opener against the Carolina Panthers . Afterward, in the locker room, veteran players who had been with other teams remarked the change in routine. The Jaguars again went in pads the following two Thursdays after working in spiders on Wednesday.

"It's the first time doing that in my career," Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokun , an eight-year pro who will appear in his 115th regular season game Sunday at San Francisco .
Coen presented his rationale last week.
INJURY REPORT: Dyami Brown (shoulder) misses practice
"The hardest thing about Wednesdays in the NFL at practice is the (players') soreness," he said. "They're still hurt. They're still sore. They just went through a car wreck (three days earlier). I've always been really interested in doing it and have got good feedback so far."
Thinking about the players' recovery. Keeping the big picture in mind. Being willing to put a new spin on old ideas. See why Coen has generated so much locker room support ? He trusts them to practice at a high tempo on Wednesdays even though they're not wearing full pads and trusts them to really get after it in a physical Thursday practice — and it has been physical, the players point out.
Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokun (23) walks off the field during the second quarter of an NFL football matchup at EverBank Stadium, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, in Jacksonville, Fla. The Jaguars defeated the Texans 17-10. The Jaguars defeated the Texans 17-10.
Players like recovery time
Per the 2020 collective bargaining agreement, teams are allowed 14 padded practices during the regular season, including 11 in the first 11 weeks. As the season approaches Thanksgiving and the injuries and general soreness begin to pile up, the pads are usually put away save for the games.

When I was in Buffalo from 2022-24, Bills coach Sean McDermott would often take it one step further, holding a walk-through on Wednesdays instead of a non-padded practice. He almost always did this after a Sunday night or Monday night game.
The Jaguars were scheduled to practice Wednesday at 11:50 a.m., 76 hours-and-change since they wrapped up a 17-10 win over the Houston Texans that was played in 85-degree weather that felt much warmer because the sun was out and they were wearing black helmets. The offense played 70 snaps and the defense 63 snaps.
10 THOUGHTS: Takeaway trend continues in win over Houston
Sports science was at the top of Coen's mind when he flipped the padded practice days.

"The intent (on Wednesday) is to get them moving, get the lactic acid out, but maybe then take some of the banging off their shoulders while still being able to get some of the work that you need to do in normal down-and-distance (plays) with spiders on," Coen said.
I asked Oluokun what his body feels like when he walks into the Jaguars' facility on Wednesday mornings to start a new work week.
"I'm pretty stiff but you get used to it," he said.
Oluokun embraces Coen's practice schedule because, "it lets you have a mentally more intentional Wednesday instead of getting through it (while wearing pads) and you can focus on what you're being taught."

But what about the offensive linemen and tight ends? The run game can be practiced wearing spiders in a kinda-sorta way.
"I like Liam's idea of giving us one more day after the game and then putting pads on — that's nice," center Robert Hainsey said .
But Hainsey said it is important to get some padded practice work.
"You want to throw your hands in pass (protection) into guys that are wearing pads because if you don't have pads on, there is a lot of jersey grabbing and your hands slip," Hainsey said.
For tight end Johnny Mundt , working in shells on Wednesday is an easy adjustment.

"I know the game plan, I know the intent, I know what we want to do," he said. "I just want to keep up with my footwork and technique."
'Good routine going on'
The general game plan installation schedule around the league is first- and second-down plays on Wednesday, third down and the start of red zone on Thursday and red zone, short-yardage, goal-line and special plays on Friday.

Take it away, Liam …
"OK, fast forward to Thursday," Coen said. "You still get a normal (down-and-distance) period and you're getting run, play-action and normal down-and-distance work with the pads on, but also now the blitz pick-ups becomes more realistic. The third downs become a little bit more realistic because you have pads on and they're one day removed from the soreness."

This was the ha-ah — or is it ah-ha? — moment to Coen's strategy.
Think about the most important plays in a football game, the plays that keep drives alive and make the difference between winning and losing. Third downs. Picking up the blitz (offense) or figuring out which blitzes will work (defense). Taking shots down the field off play-action fakes.
The Jaguars are 2-1 and want their identity to be based on being more physical than the opponent (run the ball and stop the run). Waiting a day before having the most physical practice of the week is working.
"Thursday, when you're feeling a little bit better, you're ready to bang with the pads on and get right for Sunday," Oluokun said. "It's a good routine we've got going."
