Though only two years out of high school, Heuer was draft eligible, having turned 21 on July 7.
The 6-foot-5, 265-pound righthander was in the Red Raiders' starting rotation each of the past two years. He went 4-5 with a 5.94 earned-run average his freshman year, making 10 starts in 12 appearances. He went 2-4 with a 6.28 ERA this year in 14 starts. The Cleveland Guardians drafted Heuer in the 16th round out of high school.
The two-day MLB draft started Sunday, July 13, with the first through third rounds. It concludes on Monday with rounds 4-20. San Antonio Johnson middle infielder Kayson Cunningham, a son of former Tech outfielder Marco Cunningham, went 18th overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks .
The Tampa Bay Rays drafted Tech signee Jacob Kuhn, a 6-2, 180-pound righthander from Midland College who went 9-2 with a 3.36 ERA this season. Kuhn racked up 104 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings. The Rays took him in the seventh round with pick No. 207.
The slot value for Kuhn's spot is $287,700. The slot value for Heuer's spot is $212,500.
It's the second time in recent years the Yankees have taken a Red Raiders starting pitcher. They drafted Chase Hampton in the sixth round in 2022. Hampton was on MLB.com's top-100 prospects list in 2023 and was the Yankees' No. 7 prospect this year, but the club announced in February that he needed Tommy John elbow surgery.
The highest-rated Texas Tech player on the MLB.com list of the top 250 draft prospects is right fielder Damian Bravo at No. 186. Bravo and Heuer were among the 332 invitees to the pre-draft combine that took place last month at Chase Field in Phoenix.
