Leeds United midfielder Sean Longstaff could leave Elland Road in January after losing his place in Daniel Farke's midfield plans. The Leeds Press reports that the £15m signing has played only 10 Premier League minutes this season, across two late substitute appearances.
Longstaff began his Leeds United career strongly after arriving from Newcastle in July 2025. He quickly became a regular under Farke during last season, yet an injury interrupted that run. During his absence, Farke changed the team's system, and Longstaff struggled to regain his starting role once he returned.
His prospects appeared brighter after a solid pre-season, but league opportunities have remained scarce. He started both EFL Cup matches, although The Leeds Press says his display against Chelsea damaged his chances of returning to regular action.
The report adds that at least three midfielders currently sit ahead of him. Ilia Gruev 's return to fitness could increase that competition, while Leeds' summer interest in Shea Charles suggests Farke wanted another midfield option.

There is a strong football argument for allowing Longstaff to leave if his situation remains unchanged. His experience matters. He has played more than 200 senior games for Newcastle and featured in the Champions League, while Leeds officially confirmed his four-year contract after a fee reported above £12m.
However, his current role raises a practical problem. A midfielder receiving 10 league minutes has little chance to build rhythm, confidence or influence. Longstaff can provide discipline, defensive cover and hard running, which remain useful qualities when Leeds protect a lead, but Farke's midfield now demands greater mobility and quicker progression.
The Chelsea cup display is noteworthy because it exposed the concern behind his limited league involvement. Against aggressive pressure, Longstaff struggled to move Leeds forward enough, while his preference for safer passes can slow attacks when the team needs sharper progression.
His reported 81% passing accuracy across competitions does not tell the whole story either. Passing volume and direction matter just as much, especially for a side seeking faster transitions.
Leeds must still protect squad depth. Gruev's return will help, yet injuries can change the picture. Therefore, selling Longstaff only makes sense if Farke secures a replacement capable of offering greater movement and progressive passing.
For now, a January exit looks logical if regular football remains unavailable. Longstaff needs minutes, while Leeds United need midfielders who match the current system.
