The Seattle Seahawks' 2010 acquisition of Marshawn Lynch became one of the most influential in-season trades in franchise history. The move brought him from the Buffalo Bills and helped establish the physical offensive identity that eventually carried Seattle to a Super Bowl championship.
The trade became official Oct. 5, 2010, after Seattle sent Buffalo a 2011 fourth-round draft pick and a conditional 2012 selection that ultimately became a fifth-rounder. Lynch was seeking a fresh opportunity after losing his starting role with the Bills, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll strongly pushed for the deal. Carroll believed the running back's physical style and personality could help change the direction of the franchise.

Lynch made an immediate impact during his first season in Seattle, particularly in the playoffs. His defining moment arrived in January 2011, when he broke several tackles on a 67-yard touchdown run against the New Orleans Saints in a wild-card game. The play, later known as the Beast Quake, became one of the most memorable moments in franchise history and helped Seattle secure a 41-36 upset victory.
He continued developing into one of the NFL's most productive running backs over the following seasons. Lynch rushed for 1,204 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2011 before producing a career-high 1,590 yards in 2012. His combination of power, balance and ability to break tackles made him the centerpiece of an offense that increasingly relied on a physical ground game.

Lynch was identified as Seattle's best in-season-trade acquisition in its entire history. This is detailed more in an analysis by Brady Henderson for ESPN.

Leonard Williams (2023), Ernest Jones IV (2024) and Rashid Shaheed (2025) were all in-season trade pickups by general manager John Schneider who were critical to the Seahawks winning Super Bowl LX. But the nod goes to Schneider's acquisition of Lynch during his and then-coach Pete Carroll's first season in Seattle. In exchange for a 2011 fourth-round pick and a 2012 fifth-rounder, the Seahawks got a player who would become the focal point of an offense that won Super Bowl XLVIII and was a yard short in repeating in Super Bowl XLIX. From 2011 to 2014, Lynch totaled 6,448 scrimmage yards and 56 touchdowns during the regular season.
Lynch's contributions reached their peak during the 2013 championship season. He finished the regular season with 1,257 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, earning another Pro Bowl selection while helping Seattle establish itself as one of the league's strongest teams. He also played an important role in the postseason, including the Seahawks' 43-8 victory over Denver in Super Bowl XLVIII.
The acquisition ultimately delivered far more than the draft picks Seattle surrendered. Lynch became a four-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro with the franchise, finishing his Seattle career with 6,381 rushing yards. The trade remains a defining example of how one midseason move can reshape a team's identity and contribute to a championship run.
